Just wondering why it is green and white? I heard a while back that the green has been associated with police in New York since the days of New Amsterdam.

The green and white stripes represent the 5 boros. The blue is meant for the police department(official color) and 23 stars represent the different towns/villiages that became part of NYC.. there are 24 stars and the 24th one is meant for NYC itself.

Green was from the old days in the 1600's. The watchmen use to carry around green lanterns and then hung them up at the watch house to let people know they are inside.

I guess the nypd took it as a sign of keeping watch? No idea.

Green lights still adorn the entrances to NYPD Pct. Stationhouses...

The history of it is as follows. Another psoter was correct in saying that the old NY Watchmen carried lanterns with green tinted glass, the would patrol the streets of New Amsterdam, and later NYC with their lanterns lit, so people would be able to see them and run to them for help if needed.

When the watchmen returned to the "Watchhouse" they hung their lanterns outside the front door on a hook to indicate, the watchhouse was manned...

Thus the history of the green lanterns which still are very much a part of NYPD History.

The NYPD flag, which was adopted in 1919, has five alternating green and white bars that symbolize the five boroughs. In the left corner are 24 white stars on a field of blue. The blue field represents the department, and 23 of the stars represent the separate towns and villages that became part of New York Cityin the consolidation of 1898. The 24th star represents the city itself. Green is a traditional police color associated with the department since the time of the Dutch.
