View Full Version : 4 Oakland Officers Shot
OAKLAND, CA (KGO) -- Four officers are in critical condition and one suspect is dead after a grisly scene which took place on the streets of East Oakland Saturday.
It happened in the 7600 block of Macarthur Boulevard near 74th Avenue.
Story continues belowAdvertisementThe four officers were gunned down within a two-hour time period. It all started at 74th and Macarthur during a traffic stop by two motorcycle officers.
The suspect shot both officers and fled.
An intense manhunt ensued with calls for mutual aid going out and air support from both the California Highway Patrol and Alameda County.
The officers were taken to Highland Hospital in critical condition.
A heavily-armed SWAT team searched building within a ten-block radius of the shooting. Oakland police blocked off all access between 73rd and 79th Avenues, and between Bancroft and Outlook Avenues.
Police say around 3:00 p.m. an anonymous citizen reported a suspect barricaded at an apartment building at 74th and Hillside. Police looking for the suspect raided that building and as they did two more officers were gunned down.
"The person responsible for shooting at the two officers, were barricaded at an apartment located close to this area. A subsequent search of the apartment building, our SWAT team was called in, and during the search for the suspect the suspect fired and struck two more officers. And, they were transported to Highland Hospital in critical condition also. The officers returned fire in defense of their lives and the suspect was deceased," said Howard Johnson, Oakland's Interim Police Chief.
There was a lot of panic and pandemonium at the scene of the shootings. Residents were seen running for cover as police officers raided the apartment building and more emergency officials were called to the scene.
Much of Macarthur and the nearby neighborhoods remained closed to traffic and locked down Saturday evening.
Police say they do not believe there are other suspects involved but their investigation is still ongoing.
Hopefully the 4 officers pull through.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, I just got a text message from a friend at ACSO.
All four are deceased.

Three Officers, Suspect Die In Oakland Shootings
Posted: 1:37 pm PDT March 21, 2009
Updated: 9:43 pm PDT March 21, 2009
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Three Oakland police officers were killed, another gravely wounded and a suspect was slain in a gun battle with a SWAT team Saturday in two related shootings that have rocked the community, authorities said. At an emotional Saturday evening press conference, Acting Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan confirmed the deaths.
Authorities said the deadly spree began with a traffic stop at 74th Ave. and MacArthur Blvd. at about 1:08 p.m. Two motorcycle officers were gravely wounded at that location and the armed suspect fled into a nearby building, authorities said.
Sgt. Mark Dunakin, 40, died of his wounds, Jordan said, and Sgt. John Hege was gravely wounded and battling for his life.
A short time later, acting on a tip, police surrounded a building on Hillside St. and 74th Ave -- a block from the initial shooting scene. A SWAT team was sent in and shot it out with a suspect, who had barricaded himself inside and was armed with an assault weapon. Two officers were killed in the exchange of fire and the suspect killed.
The officers killed were identified by Jordan as Ervin Romans, 42, and Daniel Saki, 35. The gunman was identified as Lovell Mixon, 27, Oakland. He was wanted for a parole violation for previous assault with a deadly weapon, Jordan said.
“We received information as to the whereabouts of where the suspect was,” Thomason said. “We had SWAT officers go into that building and that’s where the shooting took place.”
Jordan said the department was still investigating, but they did not believe there were any other suspects.
"At this point we don't believe there are other people involved, but it's too early to tell," he said.
Meanwhile, the mood was somber outside the police station in Oakland as the investigation continued.
"This is a highly sensitive situation that we're dealing with right now with our OPD family, and we're still trying to notify family members that their family members were hurt," Thomason said.
Hours after Saturday's shootings near a busy intersection just blocks from a police substation in east Oakland, people were still at the scene of the first shooting as police tape blocked off streets.
Mo Wiley, 32, of Oakland, said emotions still are raw from the Grant shooting.
"Oakland is a beautiful place," Wiley said. "But I just hate when it gets ugly like this."
Meanwhile about 20 people taunted police near the scene of the first shooting.
A group of Oakland ministers went to the hospital to offer prayers and condolences to the family members of the injured officers and the dozens of Oakland police officers who gathered there.
They said that on Sunday morning they would urge their parishioners not to let the event tear the city apart.
Pastor Raymond Lankford, executive director of Healthy Oakland, urged people to show support for the officers and their families.
"What officers do, that's a tough job," Lankford said. "They need love, they need support. They need to know the community is behind them."
The slayings marked one of the deadliest days for law enforcement in Bay Area history. The greatest loss of life to local law enforcement officers occurred on July 19, 1898 when five Alameda County Sheriff’s deputies were killed when a suspect detonated a barrel of explosives.

White Sox's Guillen honors Oakland PD victims
By Mark Gonzales
PHOENIX - White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen wore the initials "OPD" on his cap in memory of the four Oakland, Calif., police officers who were shot and killed this weekend.
"It should be a sad day for the Bay Area," Guillen said before Sunday's game with Oakland. "I never see anything sadder than a police funeral."
A moment of silence was observed before Sunday's game at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
"We only worry about police when they are killed," Guillen said. "We don't give them enough credit for making our lives easier."

"The Final Inspection"
The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"
The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges
can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.
There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

I gave been reading the boards for a few months, but today is the first time I have post a message. This message is directed to the many prospective officers who frequent these boards. Prior to coming on the job, I prepared myself in every possible way, mentally, physically and even spiritually. I visualized (and still do) on how I will stay in the fight if I was to get shot in the head. But, the one thing I was not prepared for is how I would feel when a partner was injured or killed. I have been on the job for over ten years. I have had partners that have been shot (one on my day off). It is a helpless and guilty feeling. Today in hearing this story, I shed a tear for officer's who work hundreds of miles away. But it hurts the same as though they were from my own department. My prayers go out to the families and partners of these officers. I wish I had some advice to officers on how to cope with it, but I don't. Just another thing to add to the equation before you come on the job.

Much love to those 4 Officers who passed in the line of duty. Tomorrow at work i will wear a band over my badge in thier honor. After hearing about this NO OT, RUNNING SHORT HANDED, CRAPPY ADMIN, LOUSY SALARY does not seem to bad after all. Point is brother and sister officers live each day to the fullest. Love your familes and friends. Wear that badge with great honor. Life is to short to think about the negative and crappy things going on in the world.

Although I didn't know any of the officers or anyone from OPD, my wife and I have decided to donate our tax refunds this year to the families of the fallen officers. They will need it more than we will, its the least we can do for four brave policeman that died serving their country and the city of Oakland.
Very nice of you and your wife. I am sure it will be appreciated.

In the wake of the killing of four police officers by a lone gunman Saturday, the Oakland Police Officers Association has set up three trust accounts thus far for the families of the fallen officers .
Sgt. Mark Dunakin, 40, of Tracy; Erv Romans, 43, of Danville; and Dan Sakai, 35, of Castro Valley, died Saturday after being shot in two related events by Lovelle Mixon, a 27-year-old parolee. Police later killed Mixon.
Motorcycle officer John Hege, 41, of Concord, was pronounced brain dead at Highland Hospital Sunday morning, police said. A fifth officer, whose name was not released, was grazed in the head and a bullet entered and exited his shoulder. He was treated and released Saturday.
Anyone who would like to make a contribution to trust funds set up for the families may do so by two methods — wire transfer or by check.
Wire transfers may be made directly to the following Merrill Lynch accounts: The Dunakin Children's Family Trust, Acct. No. 204-04065; The Romans Children's Family Trust, Acct. No. 204-04066; and The Sakai Family Trust, Acct. No. 204-04064. No fund had been set up as of Monday afternoon on behalf of Hege, who had no children.
Individual checks can also be made out to the families and mailed to the Oakland Police Officer's Association, Attn: Rennee Hassna, 555 5th Street, Oakland, CA, 94607. Make checks payable to the Dunakin Children's Family Trust; the Romans Children's Family Trust; Sakai Family Trust.

The gravity of this tragedy is too much to comprehend. For all of us who work in LE, imagine losing four brothers from your department, let alone your jurisdiction. Unthinkable. I read a comment on this post re the parole system let the suspect down. It did. That P.O.S. should have been eating chokers and writing letters somewhere in CDC. When will they learn that these knuckleheads are domestic terrorists and need to be dealt with accordingly? God speed brothers...
