I know that your under investigation for a whole 2 years even after joining the academy, but what about pre-hire? I realize there is some sort of standard that is to be met before being recruited for the academy that goes along with being 4Q'ed, but how and when do you know that your preliminary BI has been completed?
Reason I ask this is its been about 2 and a half weeks since I met my investigator, and she told me things would be going rather quickly with me so I can be ready for hire with my older exam if July is a sure thing. I was expecting to hear that my pre-liminary investigation would be completed within a week or so but it doesnt seem that way. I have been periodically calling NYPDs automated APD number, and my case is currently "Active" so that means I'm not on review or anything (and I have passed all the exams). Will you ever know when its over, or do you just get a letter in the mail for your mini-med?

you will just get a letter in the mail for your mini med. but i would call my BI like once every week or two to make sure all is set.

Last I called her had to have been about a week ago, I asked if she needed anything from me and she told me she had everything she needed from me since I had to fax her a few things after my initial meet. I don't want to be a bother to her because that can never be a good thing, but I do call the automated line more frequently. Like I said, my case is currently still active, and I was told I'll hear a "4Q" once its complete. I just want it done in time for the mini med letters. Is it true mini-med letters are going out in April and May?
I'm going to have to assume I'm going to get one.

its usually a month before the academy starts so i would say end of april early may for july.

With that said I guess I shouldn't worry then since there is time. I just remember my BI saying she wanted me to get her my remaining paperwork ASAP (and I faxed it to her two days later and she told me she has it all) since my process was going to be completed rather quickly. But with letters going out within the next two months I'm assuming I should be 4Q'ed by then.
As far as the size of the academy, I'm convinced we wont know till late June, early July.
Anyone know when the academy is scheduled to start?

its usually the second week of july. the question is when does the current class grad you can then base it off that.

i dont believe that you will here "4Q" on the automated line. i think it only says "your case is currently active" even if you are actually 4Q

The only person who will tell you if you are 4Q is your BI. If you call any automated number it will tell you that its active, thats all. Also i think its at their discretion, they can send you to the academy with only a few steps of BI completed, the bad part about that is that if they do find something they don't like, you will be fired on the spot. Since most people quit their current jobs right before academy that would leave you without your old job and without NYPD job. You have plenty of time before the July class, the more Bi will be completed the better for you.
It took me a month from the day my BI started to hear 4Q.

I also heard the automated line tells you if your on review at all. Is that true?

The line should tell you if you are on review supposedly it has told people they were active when they were on review. But usually it is pretty accurate. It doesn't, on the other hand, tell you if you are 4Q. If you are 4Q it will just say you are active.

If it does tell you you are review is it just for investigative review or could it be review for other reasons (i.e. medical, psychological, etc.)?

just review I think.
A few weeks ago I got letter from my BI to sign some paperwork and send it back to her. The accompanying letter said to sign these 4 forms and this concludes my BI part of my Investigation. I have the mini-medical left, just waiting on that. Anyone else get that letter?

Nope, when did you start your BI?
I started mine 3/4. Sooner or later than yours?

Wow! I had an officer tell me, I guess about a year ago now, that he didn't get that letter 'til he had been on the force for 3 or 4 years!

I really hope I get that letter soon. Like I said, its been almost 3 weeks since my BI started. Sure it'll be soon. Mini-med letters are going out within the next 6-8 weeks I hear.

Just to clarify, it didn't say my Investigation was done, but my Background Investigator was done with her part.
One of the forms I got and had to sign was an understanding that I will continue to be investigated throughout the Academy, and after I believe it said. Just wanna clarify when I said the BI part of my Investigation, I meant my Background Investigator's part.

I called CRU today, and they said while all my exams are finished and passed, my investigation is on 'hold.' I wasn't happy to hear this and asked why I was placed on review, and the woman on the phone (who was very nice) told me I'm not on review, but hold because my investigator has mailed and faxed out my paperwork to all agencies regarding my information (i.e. Social Security, High School, College, etc.) and is waiting for them to come back before completing my investigation.
I asked if there was anything I needed to do, and she said no that it is all in the investigators hands and everything should go smoothly. She also called this natural and said I could call CRU every few weeks to find out but I should be fine.
Just clearing this up for anyone who finds out they are on "paperwork hold." its not a big deal and does not mean you are on review.
Also, I asked about July, and as usual is still a mystery inside of an enigma. The department is going through with the process ONLY FOR OLDER EXAM CANDIDATES because July is expected. And as far as mini-med letters go, they should be going out in May if the class is on. Thats all I could find out regarding July.

What is CRU?

Candidate Resource Unit.
NYPD Joe gave it to me, its a great number to call, the woman was very friendly on the phone too. The number is 718 972 3120.
Give them a call, they'll help you out if you have any questions.

yea not too bad, a little rude at first but they all are usually. She told me I am good to go she said that if there is a class I should most definitely be in.

I mentioned that my exam was 5006 and that my investigator said I'd most likely get the call for July if it happened, the CRU rep said "Yes, that is right" and asked who my investigator was.
I pretty much just gotta wait but she said I should call CRU every so often to check back. I don't get like the "hold" on my investigation though. Like I said, it has been 3 weeks.
