hello i have a question in regards to the NY State Court Officer exams in october and december, if I take one of them how long is the wait until they call me? Reason I ask is because I don't want to become an officer until after i graduate college, and im not sure if they are going to call directly after taking the test or is it like a few months to a year or two later that they typically call you for the hiring process? Thanks everyone

Can almost garauntee a wait of well over a year before the first class is in the Academy. First they give the test, then there's a period for challenges to questions, the a list is established....each step can take a few months. The the brass gets together and determines how many slots will be filled with the first class. Then the politicos call and whine about the niece, nephew, son or daughter that is languishing on the about to expire old list. So one more class from that list is put in. Then the new list starts to get called.

graduate college,
Make sure you graduate, not for the courts, for yourself.

And stay away from criminal justice.......get a degree in something that can be used in the real world.

i sought of agree.
every degree can be used in one way or another, depends what you plan to do with it. better advice would be to keep your options open and study something that can open a new door in case the officer job doesn't work out.
to be honest, a college degree is nothing more than bragging rights and help for an entry level job (it has its other benefits as well.. moreso the "experience" of college rather than the actual education). Most professors are theorists.. 90% of the time practice is nothing of the like. on-job experience beats everything (though in some cases like local PDs you need a higher education)
This is coming from a Graduate Student..

I copied this from the website: www.nycourts.gov/courts to get some facts from someone.
I don't understand how court officers can execute a warrant. Can someone please explain this to me.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF WORK:
Under the direct supervision of a New York State Court Officer-Sergeant and the general supervision of the court clerk or other security supervisory personnel, New York State Court Officers are responsible for maintaining order and providing security in courtrooms, court buildings, and grounds.NYS Court Officers are assigned to all trial courts and court agencies. NYS Court Officers are peace officers, required to wear uniforms, and maybe authorized to carry firearms, execute warrants, make arrests and may coordinate the activities of other court security personnel

BarXOne....New York State Court Officers do not execute warrants of eviction. That is a civil function left to NYC Marshals and County Sherifs. You were citing a NJ website. The warrants mentioned in the title standards are Bench Warrants issued for failure to appear.

One example:
Guy comes to Court. For what ever reason, guy decides to give Officers a hard time. Guy gets a Discon. After a warrant check is done, we find out guy has outstanding bench warrant. Court Officers execute bench warrant and bring him before a Judge. Very simple.

Nysco beat me to the punch. My guess was that court officers would execute warrants issued by judge (I guess bench warrant would be the technical term) to retrieve a defendant or witness before the court.
Apony, the registration is sometime in May, either i) it will be posted on www.courts.states.ny.us, or ii) it will be mentioned and spread like wildfire on this forum

Court Officers can execute Bench Warrants (post arraignment) but not Arrest Warrants (pre-arraignment)
