View Full Version : Background Investigator Speculation for next NYPD Academy

Hey guys, I posted this in another thread, however this information seems valid enough to warrant a new one devoted specifically to what the background investigator said.

Please, share any word of what your background investigators have said about possible academies as well !

For those eager to hear official word, who said speculating can't be fun?

"I later asked the inevitable.. "Have you heard anything on class size? When there will be an academy?"

The answer was a little shocking.. Not sure how well the BI would know this information but they told me that they are thinking about starting up an academy next month ! Is this possible? Very, very strange news..
Also about class size, the BI said it may be 250 candidates per academy - One next month (if it happens) and one in July.. so 500 total within the next 4 months.

Has anyone heard anything similar to this? This sounds, if true, like great news to me. I'm still curious and don't know what to make of this.."

Not trying to be too negative here. But I wouldn't bet on it.

I heard two different things from two different investigators.

The class is either going to be 250 (my BI) or 400 (another BI). I strongly believe the class is going to be a decently sized one of 500-700.

My investigator said she doesn't know how big it'll be, she just said I'm going to be done with the process quickly due to the fact my exam number is towards the top of the list to be hired, but even I know that isn't a guarantee.

I heard a minimum of 250, but with the class being 400 to 700 cops a good possibility. Let's hope for the best.

Not for nothing but investigators usually dont know more then we do. They here the same rumors we here. Almost everyone of us has a family member or friend in NYPD and we find out what they here. Which is just rumors.

This is what everyone should be saying...

I heard that when they start calling people up and they ask them if they want to join the NYPD Academy, on that first day we would know how many people would be in the next class.

The only two people that I half-trust what they say regarding the size of NYPD academy class size and start dates is Mayor Bloomberg and Commissioner Kelly....other than those two people, I don't believe it one single bit....No BI's, no hooks, no family, no nothing.

this was something I was aware of, and worried about.

it's pretty obvious they are in need of officers though. they went from 41,000 to 31,000 POs in a very short amount of time. A lot of guys from the 1980s are past the 20-year, half-pay pension. The economy didn't help with encouraging them to retire, but it's going to happen sooner or later. Also, the classes held at that time were huge, sometimes over 1600 candidates. That's 3200 POs a year.

My BI just seemed to have some idea of what was going on, but like you said they may just hear rumors as well. At the least, it seems like this idea is maybe being thrown around. And at the medical they seemed pretty eager to get the new candidates processing through.. maybe it's a sign of what's to come.

This is why I made this thread - to hear what everyone's BI's have said. The truth is somewhere in all of that fluff.

Sometimes you can't believe even what they say hahah.. But there ARE people below them that would know. It's not like they're the only two people who text each other secretly discussing academy size. The question is who?

I agree with you. Its not a case of the nypd trying to make up their mind of how many, if it was up to them they would hire 2000K. They have to get the word from the mayor, who gets the work from the gov, ect.

2 thousand, thousand? now that's a lot of recruits ;)

i have to agree with this. but as the thread states, pass down information from BIs.. maybe a few of them actually do know.

The department (including Ray Kelly) will always cry that we're undermanned. It's simply that old adage, "It doesn't hurt to ask." Sometimes the city government finds a way to hire more cops, sometimes it doesn't. It really does come down to the budget. It's not about how many cops Boro Commander X or Deputy Commissioner Y thinks he needs. It's about how much cash the city is willing to send the department's way.

Because it comes down to that, I wouldn't believe for a minute what some BI (who, at the end of it all, is just a PO or maybe a 3rd grade Detective) says about how big the next classes will be...just like I don't believe the rumors circulating around my own command and among the cops I know at other commands. It's all just rumors. Better to worry about getting your paperwork and appointments squared away than worry about whether it's going to be 250, 400, 700, or 200,000 in the next class.

You also need to realize that background investigation takes a bit more than a month in order for you to get a 4Q. After that it continues for another 2 years, a red flag can be found anytime.

I don't think anyone knows yet. I don't think they are still trying to figure out what they are going to do.

The department (including Ray Kelly) will always cry that we're undermanned.

Actually...screw Ray Kelly...Everytime I hear him cry that the NYPD is udnermanned, he's ALWAYS followed it up by saying that crime is down X%. What does this mean? This means that the Commish can expect a crime rate as this with this many less officers.

All they do is take the newest people and put them in the areas where the crime is the highest...this doesn't resolve anything except move crime to another area eventually...What are they doing, cleaning up the bad areas to only have it dispersed to a neighboring area? Of course when you throw enough **** on the wall, some of it will stick; and when you saturate the highest crime rate areas the crime rate in those areas will go down...but the only question that remains is where will the crime go next?

its all good nick, they just hate cadets in the academy. my oci came in asked the cadets to stand up, and was like f*ck you, f*ck who you know, i dont give a sh*t, i will go back to patrol. they mess with them all the time its funny.

things are going well. got the 2nd trimester coming up on april 6 as well as drivers training which will be fun. the time is flying by, the days drag, but the weeks fly. the first month sucks and ull be asking youself "what the hell did i sign up for" lol but if you make it past the first month its all down hill from there. hows everything coming along for you guys?
