Position Title: SCHOOL POLICE OFFIER

Job Description

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the direction of the Hesperia Unified School District Police Chief, the incumbent will perform a variety of investigative and protective duties of a School District Police Officer as authorized by Education Code Section 39670 et. seq. and as a peace officer of the State of California as authorized by Section 830.32 of the California Penal Code.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Conducts investigations into criminal acts occurring on District property, including bus transportation and makes arrests as required by law.
- Patrols buildings and grounds to provide protection against vandalism, burglary, arson, trespassing and theft.
- Makes recommendations regarding security matters and prepares written reports to be submitted to prosecuting agencies and/or school administrators for possible suspension or expulsion; counsels juvenile offenders and advises parents.
- Conducts investigations of crimes against property and persons, identifies types of crime and collects, preserves and impounds evidence; attends court hearings or trials as required.
- Maintains orderly control of large crowds and enforces safety regulations at special events (athletic events, dances, plays, open houses, etc...) and other events as assigned.
- Enforces parking regulations on District property.
- Walk-tests schools and central offices to ensure that the intrusion system is operating properly.
- Cooperates with other law enforcement agencies.
- Establishes, maintains and/or supports standards of personal conduct and discipline in accordance with the current discipline policy approved by the District.
- Provides instructional intervention programs relating to gang activity and drug/substance abuse.
- Conducts and participates in training courses; prepares reports and correspondence.

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Serves warrants and civil papers.
- Transports District monies or mail.
- Performs other duties reasonably related to the job class as assigned.

ABILITY TO: Collect and preserve evidence, prepare cases for complaint and represent the District in court; ability to write complete and concise reports; emotional stability and physical condition necessary to perform the duties of the job class; ability to collect and analyze information and make independent judgments; ability to establish/maintain effective working relationships with pupils, staff, law enforcement agencies and the public; must have good interpersonal communication skills and must be able to relate well with young people and diverse cultures.

As a classified supervisory employee, the successful candidate will receive 22 days of paid vacation plus 3 days of unpaid non-work administrative leave; 14 holidays (including [1] birthday holiday), excellent District family medical, dental and vision coverage. Disability insurance and $80,000 in life insurance for the employee only is also paid by the District. This position is covered under the PERS Retirement system. STARTING DATE: As soon as possible after offer of employment. ASSIGNMENT: The incumbent will have District-wide law enforcement responsibilities with primary assignment to one of the secondary sites. SELECTION PROCESS: All applicants must submit a Hesperia Unified School District classified application. Resume` and letters of reference are desirable. Job Requirements

Age over the age of 18
Education High School Diploma or GED/graduate of P.O.S.T. approved law enforcement training adademy with an emphasis on 830.1 or 830.2 of the Penal Code
Experience Must ppossess a current P.O.S.T certificate or currently employed as a Level One Reserve with a Level One Reserve P.O.S.T. Certificate with 10 minimum years field experience. Five years expr. in public schools &/or w/local law enfrcmnt. agency is pref'rd
Additional Requirement :
Advanced knowledge of modern investigative and law enforcement procedures; knowledge of applicable State and municipal codes, especially the California Education Code as they apply to law enforcement in a school environment; knowledge of court procedures. OTHER: Possession of a valid California driver’s license and qualified to render basic first aid. Applicant must be a United States citizen or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship (Government Code 1031) is required. BACKGROUND/INVESTIGATION/TESTING:The selected applicant will be fingerprinted and must receive Department of Justice clearance and FBI clearance (paid for by the successful candidate). A thorough P.O.S.T. background check will be made. The selected applicant must also successfully pass psychological testing, a P.O.S.T. standard physical and a polygraph exam. A tuberculosis test is required.

Wow, that seems like a lot for a School Police, or any entry level LEO position!

You have to have ten years on the job in the field before you can apply for this.

I believe their Officers are considered management, thats why the starting pay is so good. If I read the posting right, it looks like they want either a regular POST plus 5 years school / LE experience, OR a Reserve Level 1 POST with 10 years field experience.

From what I have heard (so may be off a little), they only have 7-10 officers. I've been told that the Admin is good and they have supplied the troops with all the toys.

The California SPB / VPOS system has had an announcement for this position for almost a year now. It makes me wonder; decent pay, CalPERs transferability; what's wrong? :confused:

For all the training/experience they are requiring, $70654 annually is not a whole lot of cash...
