Which Police Departments Do Not Require College Credits In New York?

I just wanted to get a list of Police Departments that do not require college credits. Feel free to share in some info. Thanks.

I think the Westchester County PWKY Police do not require college credits.

Greenburg, Elmsford, and White Plains also do not require college credits.

Suffolk County does not require College Credits. They usually get about 30,000 Applicants, so your chances are... pretty low.

NYS Court Officer and TBTA don't require college credits. TBTA won't be giving an exam for a few years, but NYS Courts is giving an exam later this year.

CRS - the Parkway Police were merged into the Sheriff's dept in 1985. No such agency exists. Its Westchester County Police.

Wrong, there are plenty of other Departments, such as Nassau County, that require college credits. I wish they all did.

Indeed it does. An Officer who has a degree shows he has some level of education and intellect and not some thug, and a study conducted by the NYPD has shown that an Officer with a Bachelors Degree has better conduct, by 74 percent. This is why they continue to fund the Cadet Corps.

There Are Some People That Only Have Le Experience And No College. College Does Not Necessarily Make You A Better Officer. I Know Plenty Of People That Have College Degrees And They Are Not Too Bright.

I think the cadet corps should be disbanded or re-organized. Too much access of information to some 17 year old college kid. Sorry, not something I approve of.

College does NOT make the cop. I would rather be partnered up with a street smart cop than a cop who just got his first career as a cop and does not even know common street senses to get by.

I agree.. partly.

being a cop and policing are two different things. college may help the policing aspect.

departments don't care about the actual college education, but it may help you get promoted because you're used to studying for bigger scale exams. They do however, care about the college "experience"..

so while I would agree with the whole street smart cop vs the first "harvard grad" student who led a sheltered life, there are pros and cons to both:

1. the street cop would know the area (through exp.), have an uncanny ability to figure out whats going on..

2. the grad student may be able to follow and understand how policing works, and in turn follow procedure better.

That comment on the cadet core has a valid point, however, I don't know how much access they generally have. I do think it's a great program though - it can keep younger kids straight and focused on a goal (hence out of trouble)

I don't understand what he means by access of information. Most Cadets move on to become Police Officers. It's no different than a Police Explorers group in reality.

Right! We all know this already. He said POLICE DEPARTMENTS, not armed peace officer depts. Maybe he wants POLICE OFFICER status only!!!!!! I am an armed LEO with peace officer status and paid by the state to pay attention to detail. He was very specific.

Does New York State give the Definition of Police Officer Status, or are all Police Officers 'Peace Officers'?

Police Officers are defined in section 1.20 of the Criminal Procedure Law and are specifically enumerated in this section as police officers. Only persons listed in this section are police officers under NYS law.

Well the cadet needs to be 18 years old to get hired and need to have 45 credits. By the time most students get 45 credits there 19 or 20 years old.
Plus its a good program, most cadets become police officer or else they have to payback the bonus checks. The cadets can get around 2000 to 2500 dollars per semester ( cuny students) and private college students about 5000 dollars.
Most Cuny students have FAFSA and TAP. Basically the money you get from police is pocket money not for tuition. :eek:
If you have full FAFSA and TAP and your in cadet crops.
You get 2000 dollars from FAFSA and 2000 from cadet crops. Also if you have peter something scholarship and ACG grants (both around 800 dollars)
you get about 4800 dollars each semester NOT working. Most students still screw up :(

Co-Op City is not a true POLICE department. They are employed as PEACE OFFICERS.

Again, the difference is slim to none, but it is still divided in the PL from a 1980's law.

Tell me about it, I was reading their blotter earlier today after being here on O.com they are basically a fully functioning department. Constant fights, DOAs, robberies.
