You can take it apart and it fits directly into a usb port for easy download.

+1 on the olympus, several models that all have direct usb port for easy saving, plus descent battery life and easily turned on when you need it. Saves lots of stupid mouth beefs.

I also use the Olympus, and it uses the same USB cable that my phone and digital camera use to connect to the computer. Good quality, dependable, and doesn't eat batteries. It can also take a beating and still work....don't ask :D

I have one of these for class lectures(non-academy, because you can't record academy lectures), but I can see how the Olympus is a lot better with the design on putting the buttons on the side.
Can't complain because Sony quality is excellent and the Sony software has a noise-reduction filter.

I also use an Olympus. I like that it only runs on 1 AAA battery, you don't need any software to transfer your files to cd, and it doesn't use any cables. I bought the external mic for it and I use it all the time. It has actually saved my butt a few times.

Our traffic guys have the external mic. It seems to work well.

+1 I carry this one in my shirt pocket with no external mike and it works flawlessly. The only downside is that it takes a little fumbling to turn it on so I usually turn it on before I arrive at a scene if I know that there is a possibilty of needing it.
Also, I liked it so much, I decided to buy the deluxe version which records in stereo and supposedly has a much more sensitive built in microphone. Well guess what? Because it is so sensitive, a lot of my recordings were ruined by the sound of the recorder rubbing against my shirt, etc. Lesson learned-- the cheaper one actually being less sensitive records voices much, much better.
