Currently sworn in Colorado, active LEO in Commerce City.
For family reasons, I'm looking to move the fam to the San Diego area. I love it out there, and we'd be much better suited than where we are.
That being said, who has info about San Diego PD? Are there other departments in this area with a better reputation? I'm just starting to research the tip of the ice berg here, so any info would be helpful.
Thanks

I like working here. It's the only department hiring in the county right now. And we are going to start hiring a lot more again soon. I think we are doing POST waivers too.
The pay situation might get real bad (it already sucks). We are probably going to lose a lot of people in the next year if the city gets its way in contract negotiations. We'll know in a couple months.
Home prices are still dropping here too.

I live in Chula Vista, and I was wondering whats the take home average of a new officer? Do you have any details regarding the new contract and maybe why officers may be jumping ship?

Try SDSO. We are having a bunch of people retire. Last year is going to be their highest pay year for the foreseeable future so were losing a bunch. We are still testing. They are making lists for hire and will active them when people are needed.
Our pay is on par with anyone and our benefits are better then most. The county is in a better financial position then the city.

Please elaborate on the part I highlighted in bold..
What's wrong with the pay situation? What's the current pay for a lateral officer with say.. 4 years of experience? Are they talking pay cuts or lay offs?

From what my BI told me, the next Academy starts in April. Is there another one this year? I just passed my PAT and I've been in background since the last week of January.

Not sure. I know there is an academy graduating soon. Not sure how many if any SDSD recruits are going to be put through. Usually within a week or 2 of an academy graduating another one starts. I couldn't tell you what is going on right now.

Hey Nobody, did this change recently? I know for a fact that as of 3 months ago, the PD did NOT take waivers. You had to attend a CA POST academy, no matter what.
Go for you guys if waivers are now an option...

They can accept post waivers per their recruitment staff a couple of days ago. I am also thinking about moving back home to San Diego and doing a lateral. You must contact post and they will give you more info about taking a post waiver test. The post cost is I think $75. Call the recuiters in San Diego they will be able to give you more info.

Will the SDSO accept a T-score from another agency?
In case the original posting person missed it.

Hey all. Just figured I'd ask to those who may know...
I took the written in June of last year and they're still doing my BI. I know they're bogged down but does the fact that I live in NY have anything to do with the fact that its take excruciatingly long for this to get taken care of?
No I haven't taken any of the other exams because I was told it would be best to try and hold off just in case I did or did not get approved by a Sgt. to go onto the next phase of this whole process due to the distance.
Any insight anyone can shed would be great!

Where do SDSO officers live?
Some live in houses, some live in condos, some may live in apartments.

80 are going to retire because of changes to the DROP program. New hires (nor any other agency has it). The brand new POI on my squad gets about 1400-1500 bi-weekley after taxes out of the academy.
We will see what the changes are when the contract comes down in two months. There are a lot of proposals. But none are layoffs, and we are supposed to ramp up hiring again to 50 an academy.

Are they currently hiring recruits and if so do they use the post test or their own written test

Where do SDSO officers live? Deputies live all over the county but there is a lot who moved up to the Riverside County because the real estate is less (Temecula, Murietta, etc). I live in the northern part of San Diego County and would not move to Riverside County mainly because of the commute. If you work for the Sheriff you could end up anywhere in the county and a two hour commute is not worth it IMHO.

What areas of San Diego proper are good for a ridealong (ie busy)? I'll be down there in May for testing, so I want to do one if I can.

Southeast, Mid City, Central and Western will probably give you the most "business." I have a friend that works in Southeast and I've never had a dull moment when riding with her.

Kinda off-topic but I figured it'd be better to post here rather than start another SDPD thread. I'm pretty tired of my juvenile corrections job and saw a SDPD recruiting thing on the news this morning. Figured I might as well take the test since I have a totally clean background and all that. My question for all of you newer SDPD guys/gals is what is the average time it took you to get hired (from test until academy)? I ask because I am extremely out of shape and would have to put some work in if I were to actually go through it an go to the academy. This way I would know how much time I have (approximately) so I can try to do some work and avoid wasting SDPD's time. . .

Well you have to do the physical test the day after the written (assuming you pass the written). There is information on what that consists of on the SDPD site.

Sometimes. I do about half the time.

Ahhh I see. . . Thanks for the info because that I did not know. When I tested for my current agency the physical test was near the end of the process, with the medical eval. I guess it will be a long time before I can take that written then at my current rate. :D
Hi-Def

The test you take with the written is physical attributes test which is a mini obstacle course you have to finish within I think 3 minutes. The medical eval doesn't come until last after you've gotten a conditional job offer. You don't have to be in great shape to pass the PAT but if you don't think you can you probably can't. At my PAT a few people failed but I'm pretty sure you get a retry a month later.

Dude, get in shape before the academy. The PAT is nothing! I was in pretty crappy shape when I started the academy and it was all that much harder for me.
I really had to push myself through. Get in shape, lose some weight and body fat.
Run and do a lot of burpies!!

I totally hear you. . . I have the opposite problem than you said though, lol, I'm like hovering around 6 foot and around 160 pounds. The PT stuff like pushups, situps, mountain climbers, etc isn't the biggest problem for me. I could definitely improve those up to academy standards in a couple weeks. The problem is the running, I have always been troubled by distance runs, anything over 1 mile. I recently pulled up that "Couch Potato to 5k" running plan so I think I'll attempt that and see how it helps. . . Once again I appreciate the information you guys provided. . . :D

Regarding SDPD, I have heard that the department issues SIG P229s. Is that accurate? If so, what caliber and what type of trigger (DA/SA, DAK, DAO, SAO)? I've also heard that the authorized carry list is almost 900 weapons long; is there any truth to that?
beachcop05
03-27-2009, 11:59 AM
The weapons list is pretty long, and they issue the SIG P229 compact, 9mm.
