Are you serious? Two days off in six months? I don't believe this too much.

Believe it, also, you'll do some OT in the academy. And for those of us who really wanted the job, all that didn't matter.

You have Saturdays and Sundays off as of right now...with those 2 holidays...you don't work 7 days a week.

I'm sure they get more than just two days off in six months. Regardless,
if you want it bad enough then days off shouldn't be an issue. Police department's are looking for people who are hardworking and go-getters.

People looking for straight unchanging shifts with weekends and holidays off should look at another profession !

LOL.. ahhh...
NO DAYS OFF in the academy unless it is serious. The best they will do is switch your tour. Lets say you are in the academy from 7-3pm and you have a family function or something during those times... then you will be rescheduled for 3-11pm. AT THE MOST. No excusals during the academy.

Yep. This one person had a fire at his house and it actually burned down. He spoke to a sgt and she denied him the day off and threatened him with a CD. He didn't goto work, a lieutenant showed up at his house and saw that his house was actually burned down and took care of the rest. But from what I recall a CD was actually issued out.

I guess the only legitimate reason of you not reporting is death.

How is working M-F with weekends off bad? Lol
I don't get it...don't we all want our weekends off? Yeah, not having personal/sick/vacation days suck, but oh well....eat sh*t for 6 months and live happy for 20 years.
Btw, what happens if you say, "call-out" a day b/c your're under the weather? The reason I ask is because a buddy of mine just went through the FDNY academy and told me this story:
Someone called out sick on a Monday so they sent a crew to his house and check on him. They brought him to a doctor and they did some blood tests on him. The blood tests showed that he was drinking over the weekend, and that was the reason in which he was feeling under the weather. Regardless, the FDNY cut him from the academy. The person claimed he only drank Friday night....and this was Monday morning where they took the blood tests. Yeah hangovers can last a while, but for it to last both Saturday and Sunday, and still linger on to Monday? And for them to toss him out for this reason? I found it quite unbelievable, but I do agree and respect that decision to cut him. If you're in something as committed as an academy for the NYPD or FDNY, you need to man up and live through the days where you're just a bit sick.

You can go regular sick. Which means you call in sick a few hours prior to your tour and you have to see the district surgeon that same day or after. It's in your best interest not to go sick in the academy, plus it goes on your record. When I was in the academy I went sick for a few days since I got food poisoning from Rodmans Neck aka the range (Don't eat there).

That's pretty crappy. I mean, I know days off should be kept to a 0 when you're in the academy, but when your whole house burns down, they should at least let you take the day off and maybe give you an extra tour since you did.

Are you sure? Because I knew some people in that last proby class that got caught doing much worse things than that and are still employed.

Well I only know what I heard; there's always two sides to a story...he may have had called off sick a few times earlier and made it a habit; who knows the real truth....but just saying what I heard.

You don't decide anything for yourself in the academy, unless its mandatory OT then you can decide to take cash or time. Everything else will be decided for you...This is a para-military organization, get used to that now, know it now. The minute you raise your hand you give up your right to an opinion, so shut up and do as your told, if you think this sounds harsh, this is not for you b/c what i can say isn't half of what you will experience.
I don't know about those MOS who were in bigger classes but my class(Jan '09) there are a lot more eyes looking at a lot less bodies, comport yourself accordingly. Also good luck with the process.

you can take days off at the academy, no big deal.
youll just be like one of those holdovers sitting around in their gym gear all day doing nothing but walking around the hallways and hanging out in the locker room acting like they are above you. this is one girls 3rd time around, and she got "hurt" again. when (IF) she graduates she will be at top pay lol

Just a few questions, some to do with the Academy, and some not:
How many people (percent) would you consider overweight in your class? Purely curious.
When you graduate from the Academy, how does training from there work out? I assume they stick you with an FTO for a couple of months?
How do the classes work out? Do you go to different locations on some days at different times?
Thanks for indulging in my curiousities.

I posted that in the other thread 2-3 days ago. That thread has a tendency to go dead for a long time.
Thank you for answering my questions.
