If I was to go about this? What would be the next steps if I were to get picked up during or after my acadmey training? Of course I know a background check would be necessary, would a polygraph test be a requirment still? Im just asking since some of you know that my polygraph test has came back inconclusive from two departments now and I dont want to spend 4-5 thousand on the academy nor put on hold my MBA program while trying to purse a career that has been against my favor from the start
I know the chances are small to avoid the poly test, but I had to ask and being in class right now, my boredom has kicked in listening to a class project done by dense students :D

You would still have to take the poly with all depts you test w/. I can't think of too many that don't utilize the poly as part of the process. With the current economic situation, I personally wouldn't sponsor myself in "hopes" of getting picked up.
Wish you the best...lots of students are staying in school so they don't have the face the job market of today. I'm glad i'm not in those shoes bro

Putting yourself through the academy would definitely not excuse you from a polygraph.
From what I know about the process and from what I have heard from other applicants and leo's, anyone can self-sponsor as long as they pass the written and PAT, along with clearing DOJ to qualify for a firearm. If you self sponsor and apply either during your time in the academy or after your graduation, you will still have to apply to each individual agency and go through an Oral Board Interview, Poly, Pysch (Written & Clinical), and a complete Background Investigation for each agency applied to.
I considered going the self-sponsor route, but with the current economy, lack of income while in the academy, and no guarantee of a job after graduation, I just can't bring myself to pull the trigger. I'd like to know that an agency is willing to put me through an academy as it shows they are committed to hiring me and are willing to make an investment in me with time, training, and money.

Go the MBA route. I am currently self-sponsored through a modular RBC, and the only regret I have is that it is costing a LOT.
Most academies will not require a poly for entrance, some may conduct a background check (some are not as thorough as others--mine was not). Inconclusive itself does not mean good or bad. It is just the opinion of the polygrapher that they can't tell either way, but most agencies will interpret this as a negative (especially given how picky they are with whom they hire right now). I wouldn't discount yourself entirely, but let an agency shell out the big bucks to put yourself through.
I decided to go the self-sponsored route because I did not want to wait, I wanted my POST accreditation the same time I am working on my Bachelors. We'll see where it lands me.
Good luck!

Thanks everyone..I will just wait to see which deparment will pay for my way like avalon42 has stated.
Having inconclusive polygraph results bothers me though. But being a hyperactive individual, there's not much I can do. As both deputies in each deparment has said, "my readings were all over the charts".

srt,
You do realize that you will have to disclose the failures on a BG, right? That may kill it for you right there. Stay with school and get the degree.

Try a Modular program & see if you can get hired as a Level II or I Reserve. It's a part time course & you don't have to quit your day job. Not many agencies are hiring right now, especially if you have "issues".

first off polygraphs are crap, often they are used by lazy background investigators. Tell the truth, be confident in your answers and you will pass about 50% of the time.

Past poly failures don't mean anything. You still have to disclose, but don't let it discourage you. There are countless LEO's out there who have failed more than one and are working today.
I've passed one, failed one, and got hired after my third.

I have a question about self-sponsoring. A local PD is hiring for "Police Officer Trainee," the announcement says:"PRIOR TO APPLYING FOR POSITION CANDIDATE MUST BE ENROLLED IN THE POLICE ACADEMY
The non-sworn Police Trainee classification is a contract position designated specifically and solely for the purpose of employing Police Officer candidates during the duration of the Basic P.O.S.T. Police Training Academy." So how would something like that work? I apply and get into an academy, and then apply for the job? And if I don't get it, then I am wasting my $? Just a question.

You would self-sponsor through an academy. You would take the entry-tests(written and PAT) if needed, and cover the costs yourself. There is the option of financial aid in the academies through the junior colleges.Once in an academy, you would then be eligible to apply for the recruit position. Some agencies will start paying you their salary once you have passed all of their requirements, and you are now their recruit. They probably won't reimburse you anything you have paid in this case. Other agencies offer the job upon successful completion of the academy. In addition, OCSD Reserves are an example of an agency that will reimburse you the fees you have paid, yet you would be a non-paid reserve officer for them, no salary or hourly wage. You are paying upfront and it isn't cheap, yet it's an investment that could be worthwhile. You are paying for your own training, and in this economy, agencies aren't paying for the training of the entry-level recruit. There is the other side of the argument, where you are paying upfront, and there is no guarantee of getting in. Good luck to you!

Basically, you're fronting all the costs for the academy and the agency will pick you up officially as a sworn LEO after you're done. You're in their pocket for the meantime. Frankly, I would not limit myself to just one agency. Let your academy results speak for itself, and barring that you did not do anything like a neanderthal, they will be lining up to pick you up after you're done.
I am anxiously awaiting that day... :D

Anyone here do an extended Academy? I am going to put myself through and I know it is going to be a good bit of money, but I am considering doing the extended version so I can still have some form of income. If anyone has done this please message me, I have a few questons about it.
