So...would you cite your mom let alone a fellow LEO's mom?

Apparently someone gave my mom a cite for speeding.

No way man! Imagine the rift in the family that would cause...That would make for an awkward family night.

A fellow LEO's mom? I highly doubt it but there are exceptions to every rule. Most people I stop write their own tickets. Know what I mean?

How fast was she going? ;)

I wouldn't write my mom a ticket, but I might write up my dad. That's because, inside, he would be proud of me (and he probably deserved it!). :D I told him this already, and he just laughed.

So...would you cite your mom

I might taser the cantankerous old battle axe, but I would never cite her. ;)

More details please...How far over the posted speed limit was she, did she drop your name and get completely blown off?

46 in a 30 passing a cemetery. Maybe my mom should've told the copper she saw a ghost in the rear view mirror and gased it.

Yea she dropped my name but he said "Sorry not this time". My mom hasn't gotten a ticket in over 25 yrs!

I was asked this on an oral board once. I responded, "No sir, I wouldn't." The Officer asked why and I said, "Because I want to live." :D

Gave everyone at the table a good laugh.

You would think Chippie :p . No, it was in Hollenbeck Division but since it was a motor, it may have been Central Traffic.

I don't understand why some officers are so rigid about writing tickets. It's just a speeder, big fat hairy deal. The guy wrote your mother when he knew her son is a copper? Sounds like he's a punk.

No, I certainly would not. That just sounds like an oral interview question. I guess I see so many people get breaks on the serious stuff that it is a little hard to get excited about traffic stuff. Although as I review the original post, you don't specifically mention a traffic violation, but just ask if a ticket would be given. To me, at least here in Minnesota, a ticket (citation/tab charge, etc.) is just a charging document. So under the theory that it could be used to charge for other misdemeanors (we don't tab charge felonies,,,it has to be done by formal complaint) the scenario could be changed. For example, what is it were a domestic assault? In that case, of course, I would get someone else to handle the call because of the conflict of interest. Similarly, say you get called to a crash and one of the drivers is drunk and it is a family member. Again, I go with getting another agency to handle it because of the conflict of interest.

Although not a family member, I had a stop a few weeks ago that was sort of a quandary. I was parked getting ready to try a warrant. I saw a school bus slowing and the amber lights flashing. I looked in the rear view mirror and saw a vehicle traveling the other direction and I feared that it would not stop for the school bus. Sure enough the vehicle drives right past the stop arm and lights. Although I am in plain clothes and a plain car, I make the stop. I walk up and the driver looks familiar. I then realize it is one of our civilian correctional deputies. She asks if I have to issue a citation. I explained to her that I would be hard pressed to wash it away until checking with the school bus driver. (In my area they complete reports for violations.) Of course the school bus driver is absolutely thrilled that I witnessed the violation and had made the stop. I asked if she would like to see me tag the driver and she did. I saw the correctional deputy the next day in the master control room and explained to her that "my hands were tied." I did issue the citation and I, too, sort of felt that she "wrote her own ticket."

No way in hell. We ask that in our department's oral boards. " If your with a fellow officer and you pull your mom over for a minor traffic violation would you write her a citation?" Most people surprisingly say yes.

breezygirl
03-09-2009, 08:34 PM
absolutely.
I think just more for the fact that my mum has NEVER gotten anything in her life...not even a PARKING ticket!!! lol!
but not because I want to be mean....but because when i got a ticket a year ago for sumthin stupid (turnin right without my blinker.....IN A RIGHT TURN ONLY LANE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and in an extremely dead city at night, lol!), she made a HUGE deal about it and STULL gives me hell over it. If i saw her break a traffic law, i'd like to cite her so she can see how my ticket was so minor...and so she could be more understanding...lol! :)
my GRANDMA on the other hand...NOPE.

....and i say nope because she doenst even know HOW to drive...so there would never even be a reason for me to even see her on the road, lol! :)

No I wouldn't...even if it was a dirty LEO member, I still wouldn't do it. Think about all the crap we put our families through everyday we do this job? Why hit them in the wallet too when their minds and hearts are already stressed with the dangers of our jobs?

Anybody that would give their mother a ticket is a idiot.

The people on oral boards that ask that question are idiots. As they know no cop in his right mind would give mom a ticket.

Well I guess I fall into the category of " Idiot " since my department seems to ask this question on oral boards I tend to sit on once in awhile.

My mom or your spouse, no. Another leo's mom, dad, sister, brother, son daughter, cousin etc... Yes.

My wife got stopped by CHP, got her ticket, paid it, went to traffic school...end of story. Did I blame the officer? Well was it the officer that was going 83 mph in a 65, nope it was my wife. Did the money come out of my pocket, yes.

It really comes down to this. I don't know who your leo relative is, nor do I care, I've got you stopped for a traffic violation. As far as I know you could be giving me a line. 8 years in traffic I've had a few motorist tell me their brother is a deputy. I say good, he'll know how to get a hold of me. I've never been contacted by that "deputy", yet anyways.

Would I cite my mom ? No... But I did scare the hell out of my dad once.

I was on a ride along as an explorer. We were coming to a red light when I thought I recognized the car in the next lane. As we got closer, the Sgt and I saw the driver and you could tell he was worried 'cause he had what looked like the firmest grip on a steering wheel we'd ever seen(white knuckles and all). The passenger was out cold. Well, the driver was my dad, he was taking his buddy home who apparently had a couple too many. The Sgt. introuduced himself to my dad and let him know that I was riding with him that shift(I was supposed to be working the front desk.). I would have given anything to have a picture of him when he realized it was me in the cruiser...it was priceless.

During an oral board, I was asked if I'd write my dad a ticket. I said yes, but clarified my answer because I didn't want it to seem like I was one of those applicants who doesn't have a clue what the spirit of the law is. I clarified by saying that if I pulled my father over, he would have to have been going waaaaay over the limit.

Although I really like Sig4U's answer...this applies to my mother. ;)

No speeding tickets here except the dismissed 72 in a 65. Thanks CHP  ...

My question to you folks is, would you give an applicant who is in backgrounds a citation?

Although I'm not a LEO as of yet, I probably wouldn't cite my mom or the mother of a fellow LEO for the above mentioned reasons.

03-15-2009, 08:16 PM
I would not cite my mom or your mom. As someone said earlier, "people earn their cites" and I feel the same way. As far as an applicant, same answer, unless you were really doing something dangerous. I was stopped by an Alhambra PD motor when I was in the academy. As soon as he saw the 4 shaved heads in suits with county ID on the lapel, he knew he had me by the short hairs. I apologized for speeding (35 in a 25) and he let me go with a "Slow down, don't make me call your DI!"

Cite me own mum? NEVER! If a family member can show they're related to a LEO and it wasn't an outrageous incident, they get a free pass. When I was an MP for years I never would have done so. Cops don't write cops or their family members (what's up with the CHP?).

.

Funny you should say that...... I have stopped a LOT of applicants in my city who had just left the PD or were on their way to the PD. Now take into consideration that I dont stop in that area until 18 over the limit and these were well above that. 18-25mph over the limit in a residential area is hard to look the other way. If you cant obey the law while you are in your backgrounds process your decision making skills might be suspect to further review. When I was in backgrounds I drove 64mph in the slow lane, signalled every turn, hands 10 and 2...... wouldnt give anyone a reason to think twice about my application. I have even spoken with our backrgounds guy about it...... to see if he would prefer to handle it in house instead of citing them. Answer was......hell no they should know better.
