Do you think that we will see more of a backlash against immigrants, both legal and illegal, as unemployment climbs?

Mayor Says Tyson Should Hire Locals First

SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. - Egypt is about as far away from Shelbyville, Tenn., as you can get, but the two seem closer these days.

"We're probably anticipating a big crowd to start to live in Shelbyville," said Father Boutros Boutros.

Boutros leads a congregation of about 1,700 families. Recently, dozens more arrived in Nashville from Egypt on temporary visas. Some of them have already been hired by Tyson Foods in Shelbyville.

"We used to have people coming every week from Egypt," said Boutros. "They find work very soon. Nowadays, we have people that have been here for three or four months without work."

Boutrous Boutros won't find much sympathy from Bedford County Mayor Eugene Ray. Ray is urging Tyson Foods to consider hiring locals first, saying it's his job to take care of the people of Bedford County.

Ray said he has met with representatives from Tyson Foods and that he told them he realizes he can't make them hire locals.

Tyson told Ray they hire through referrals from the Tennessee Department of Labor.

Several years ago, some Tyson executives were indicted for hiring illegal immigrants.

On Monday, police and state troopers were called when minor skirmishes broke out at the local unemployment office. Many of the people showing up for work were from other countries.

Most of the people were hoping to get a job at Tyson. Fliers around town promised $500 signing bonuses and competitive benefit plans.

Tyson said there are some jobs available, but those positions belonged to people who left voluntarily, and there are only a few.

"I've filled out applications for places that are hiring, and I haven't heard anything back yet," said Glen Campbell, who has been out of work since January.

Boutros is hoping to expand his congregation in a job market that appears to be bursting at the seams.

One would hope it won't be a violent backlash where illegal immigrants are being assaulted. That’d be wrong. And it’ll make the job of police officers that much harder because of the usual language barrier that seems to exist with a lot of them. Dealing with a non-English speaking immigrant turns an incident that could be handled in a few minutes into a 30 minute or longer ordeal.

But I think it's likely there will be a bit more social consciousness and awareness as to the employment of them. Maybe there’ll even a little pressure on the employers who do.

Actually ALL unskilled non-immigrant work visas require the employer to prove they were unable to hire a US citizen or a green card holder. All of the unskilled jobs filled by non-immigrants are temporary. I do not believe the US citizen or legal immigrant can displace a non-immigrant, but they have preference in hiring. The employer must provide proof to the dept of Labor that they were unable to hire a citizen or legal immigrant. If the employer provides false information then they can be held criminally liable for providing fraudulent documents.

All these people losing their jobs and our government continues to import poor people from around the world. At the same time the government mandates that we drive smaller, less safe cars to decrease our consumption of oil, yet they bring more people in who will be consuming more oil, causing us to import more oil.
They won't be able to support their large families on what they make at Tyson, so the US taxpayer will end up paying for rent, food, education, healthcare and whatever else they can sign up for. The temporary visa holders will start birthing US citizens as fast as they can and who do you think will be paying for that.
Nothing our government does makes any sense, unless their goal is to destroy our way of life, which is exactly what they're doing.
Yeah, there should be a backlash.
