Hello, I Applied for both departments and the test for both is on the same day. I am trying to figure out which one I should go for? Advice Please. Thanks.

I would assume that OCSD would be hiring more? (larger) Less prone to hiring freeze?
Maybe not.
They also do 6+ years in the jail, so that might not appeal to you.
I grew up near Orange and owned a business in that city. (did some ride alongs too) I like the dept and the city. I would prefer them of the sheriff.
But it comes down to who will pick you up.

Both are great departments and both have its advantages over the other.
Ex. Working for a smaller agency allows you to work the field right away. You will pretty much know everyone in your department.
Although working in a bigger agency like OCSD, you would need to work the jails, you have more promotable opportunities and bigger scope of fields you can go into.
Orange is a 4/10 schedule and OCSD is 3/12 and some are 4/10.
Good Luck

I like the OPD and applied there not too long ago. Made it to the oral but they are very stricked with who they want to hire. You have to really fit their qualifications and personality. By the way I didnt pass the oral. Good Luck!

Apples and oranges.
OCSD jail time is 7 years at minimum with 4 year degree and military time. OCSD is good if you don't have a degree and want to work while getting it. OPD is good if you want to be a street cop sooner.
OCSD is good because after purgatory in the jail there are more opportunities for various assignements than any other department in the county.
Depending on the assigment OCSD can be political. Then again any agency can be that way and I assume OPD is no different.
OPD has a good reputation and their streets are "fruitful".

Working for a police department allows to work the field right away. Doesn't matter on the size.
The real question for anyone is what they want to do. Work in a jail for 7 plus years or work the streets on day one. Some will choose the former, some the latter.

I don't mean to hijack but why do you have to work in there for so long?

That's just how they do it there.
I've got a neighbor who was hired by them in the mid 90's and he just got a patrol assignment 3 years ago. He's getting up there in age, and he told me that going from decent senority at the jails to "rookie" status in patrol was nothing nice...

Sig, there are more jail assignments than patrol assignments. Its a numbers game. The administration has also not cared about their people in quite some time. This is especially true with the new sheriff. A lot of people getting fired for stupid stuff....and then getting their jobs back after appeals.
OCSD has had some issues in the past with senior jail deputies (8-10 years) getting treated like crap on patrol. So much so that many opted to go back to the jail because they didn't want to be treated like a boot after so many years on. Happily, this is changing.

Oh I see. Hopefully for them, that will all change. That's BS that they're treated like crap when they go to patrol.

Like I said, that is rapidly changing. The FTO's who were like have been replaced. Most of them. It is one thing to treat a boot fresh from the academy like a boot. It is entirely different to treat a 8-10 year vet like that. The dept. finally realized that when people were going back to the jails in high numbers.

Thanks for clarifying that. It makes sense now.
