Don't listen to Lawenforcer72!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He's not even from the cleveland area and has no idea what he's talking about. Cleveland is not doing your background for the hell of it!! Cleveland or anyother department wouldn't waste money conducting a background investigation unless you were being considered. I'm a police officer in cleveland and they need more officers. Good luck!!

If you were being considered for an alternate for that Nov class then maybe they did, who knows. Do you know if they talked to your neighbors yet or not?

There were 30 people selected as alternates for the Nov. class. I was #29 of that 30.
They talked to everyone. I know because they all came back and told me immediatley!
They told me they finished my background (in 3 1/2 weeks) and it was sent to the Public Safety Directors desk for final approval. This was in August '08.
So I guess that would put me near the top of the list for this new academy. God willing.

Since you were picked as an alternate did you do the phsyc test and all that good stuff already?
Did they ever come to your house and talk to you and your fam?
JB1978
01-15-2009, 10:59 AM
No. No psych test or medical or anything. They did stop by my house and knock but I wasn't home. They drove 2 1/2 hours to talk to my neighbors where I grew up. Suprisingly they didnt talk to any of my family. But they said they finished my background in a little over 3 weeks!
From what I understood, they had already given 70 offer letters by the time they got to me. All of them had already gone through all the testing. I was, like I said #29 of 30 on the alternate list. So it would have taken a catastrophic set of circumstances to get me in the Nov. class.
I am actually going to call them right now and get the latest!

Indeed sir.
First, F.Y.I. The police department DOES NOT decide who gets hired and who doesn't. They conduct the background checks and forward them all to city hall. City hall then does a comparison among applicants and that decides who gets in and who doesnt.
Furthermore...THERE WILL be another academy in March/April.
As for my specific case. I was informed that I was the LAST file sent to city hall for consideration into the academy that is running now. The city ultimatley decided to only go with 45 cadets in the class. Which left my file all by itself in city hall where its been sitting since August of 2008! LOL
So once some of the files that are being compiled now (which I assume is some of you) are sent to city hall then they will begin the comparison and make their decisions.
I was told I am at the top of the list for this next academy. That really doesnt mean squat, its just where my number fell.
So, if it is God's will and with His favor I will be seeing some of you in the next academy.
Good luck to everyone!

A lot of the cadets aren't passing the final state physical agility test due to the 1.5 mile run. They had around 60 people in the 125th. And only around 40-45 passed it. So keep them running shoes on and we'll see you guys in the 127th!

JB1978
02-02-2009, 06:32 PM
They have probably finished your background or are at least very close to it.
Read some of my other posts. The CPD does your background and then they're out of it. They do not determine who gets hired. They don't even give you a pass/fail for your background. It's all the folks at city hall.

You are perfectly correcft. No one can drag their feet better than politicians.
But it's our fault. We cast the votes that put the people who will control certain aspects of our futures (and control our money) in the positions to do so.
Remember when we were young and in high school and all of this history and politics stuff sounded so dumb and boring?
Not so funny now, huh?
Anyway. Its honestly not the CPD's fault. No one would like to speed this up more than them. If you wanna cause a stir, get some answers or whatever. Don't call your BI.
Call the Department of Public Safety and the Mayors Office.

You should try testing for the small agencies in NJ. I've paid as much as $99 dollars to take a test with 500-600 people for a whopping two open positions. I've also heard that Nassau and Suffolk counties on Long Island charge $100-150 dollars and STILL get well over 10,000 applications for every test.

I say 2,000. 2,500 tops. While I was standing in line a young female asked if we take the test after we turn in the app. I say "uh... no you take it next month with everyone else." she then asks me what is on the test. I ask her if she has ever taken a civil service test before and she says no. So it would seem that parties are at work beating the walls trying to get them out of the woodwork to come down and apply and take the test. I mean how ignorant do you get? It clearly spells out when to apply and when the test is. The sad thing is that is that she will already get more points than me because I'm sure shes a resident.

Yeah $10 is nothing for a test when it comes down to it. Brooklyn Hts gave a couple of tests in a row where the test fee was $100 and $75. Then you still had to pay $50 to do the Tri-C physical agility test. With the way the economy is going in NE Ohio, I imagine to see 2500 to 3000 taking the exam. Good luck to everyone.

This looks to be good news for anyone taking the Cleveland Test.
http://www.newsnet5.com/news/20205552/detail.html
CLEVELAND -- Several local law enforcement agencies in northeast Ohio will be getting federal stimulus money to add police officers and help keep streets safe.
The stimulus money will add a lot of law enforcement jobs in greater Cleveland and will reinstate some officers recently laid off.
Millions of dollars are coming to cities all over northeast Ohio as part of the $1 billion federal stimulus plan.
The money will pay full salary and benefits for the next three years. Cleveland is getting one of the largest awards in the state, about $12 million, just as applications are being given out for the civil service entrance exam.
Cleveland already planned to bring on 220 officers. Now with this new money, that number is closer to 300.
"This will improve the quality of life in the city of Cleveland. Unlike most large cities in this region, we are in a hiring mode, said public safety director Marty Flask. "The mayor has made it very clear that he wanted to increase the staffing with the division of police and these extra dollars will make that happen."
"I am submitting the application today. This is something I have wanted to do for a long time. I have a job at the moment and this is just more enticing from the benefits aspect and just for the opportunity," said Christian Gnizak, who is registering for the civil service exam.
The city of Akron will get close to $6 million to hire 23 officers. Canton, Euclid, Lorain and Mansfield are all slated to get over $1 million, which means at least 21 jobs in those communities.
Others getting stimulus cash include Ashtabula, Barberton, Brooklyn, East Cleveland, North Randall and Warrensville Heights.
The deadline for applying for Cleveland's civil service entrance exam has not been extended in light of this new money. It's still set for 4 p.m. Friday.

Its a very small thing to consider, but better safe then sorry.
p.s. it started off as a joke. ;)

CLEVELAND -- About 3,125 people want to be Cleveland cops.
The city closed a two-week enrollment period Friday for an entrance examination to become patrol officers. City officials expected about 3,500 to enroll for the civil service test because of the battered economy.
Safety Director Martin Flask said 275 people beat the deadline and were in the Convention Center at 4 p.m. Friday Applicants came from Cleveland, the suburbs and as far away as Mississippi, he said.
"We are obviously pleased with the turnout," Flask said. "This doesn't come as a surprise. We are hiring."
The civil service test is the first one offered since the Ohio Supreme Court struck down residency requirements last month. But applicants who can prove they have lived in Cleveland for one year before filing the application will receive 10 extra points on the test.
The starting wage for patrol officers is nearly $46,000 after graduating from the police academy. The test is being given, in part, because about 85 officers retire every year.
Applicants must be at least 21 and no older than 39 at the time of appointment to the police academy. If they pass the multiple-choice test, they will be placed on an eligibility list for up to two years.
About 2,000 people signed up for the last test, in 2007, and about 1,600 took the exam.

heck, you can know every answer to every question, but if you show up at 9:01am, its pointless.

Anyone know about the new hiring posting?
How many do they want?
What is the hiring process like for candidates?
How is their academy?
Thanks
I don't know how many they want, but I've heard a LT say there are planning on putting at least 5 more classes through. The hiring process goes like this: Written test.... Wait forever. Physical test... wait forever. Background check, psych and medical exam, and more waiting. Then they'll call you out of the blue and say "The academy starts in 1-2 weeks. You in?"
I took the test in 2007 and started the academy this year.
Being a civilian for my entire life and then going into the academy was... interesting. All I'll say is there's a lot of "tough love", PT, and some excellent training coupled with some very patient albeit strict instructors. Get ready to do some major push-ups, sit-ups, and run your tail off. Start TODAY, it'll only help you. I started running 3 months before the academy started, and if I hadn't, I probably would've fallen out. In February I weighed 212 lbs, down now to 168-169.

The extra points for military and residency can be the deciding factor between you and someone with the exact same score as you. There are about 10 guys/girls in our class with military, and quite a few with residency, and a few even had both. I only got the residency points when I tested, but I still got in. Keep in mind, though, there are quite a few people who got NO bonus points and still got hired.
Assuming you are a fairly intelligent person with a clean background and can pass the agility test, you have a good chance of being hired. I was ranked in the mid 500's and got in, and they're putting another class through from the test in 07. (My class's test scores range from the 400's to the mid 600's) There are a lot of people retiring, and they will need to fill these spots ASAP.
Just do your best on the test, there's not any chance of you getting the bonus points now anyway. I think you have to have lived in Cleveland for a year to get the points, and I think for military you'd have to have been in for at least 6 months...
Oh, and be prepared for the waiting game, it takes a while... Be patient! And keep taking tests while you wait. Don't put all your eggs in one basket! Good luck, and if you have any other questions, let me know.

Depends. It seemed to take forever. I did all that stuff last summer and then got into the 127th. Didn't do any of the medical or psych stuff till earlier this year. You still have to get cleared by medical, take the MMPI, pass your psych eval, and wait...

unless you score high on your test, expect to wait for sure. i took the test in 07 as well and i think it took about a year for them to get back to me. then i took the physical and then it took another couple months until they finally called me again to give me a conditional offer. i turned them down because i just started another ft job and the residency requirement, and now i'm kicking myself.
hey danny, what are the hours for the academy and how long? how big are the classes? how many people dropped out and why?

All I can tell you is what happened with me. I had to do all the psych and medical stuff in February and March, then got
"the call" about a month later, two weeks before the academy started. As for you, I can't say for sure, but they seem to be in a hurry to get more classes through. Lots of coppers retiring.

The hrs are usually 0800-1700. But there are a few weeks where we switch to 1400-2300. When the class started we had 63 and now we're down to 55. Most dropped out because they couldn't handle the PT, stress, instructors yelling at them, etc.

The 127th graduates October 30th. You mentioned the P90X program, start now!!! You'll thank yourself later. As far as scoring really high, keep in mind a lot of people will get weeded out with the background checks on this next test. They can afford to be a little more picky now that the residency rule is gone.

Even if they only hired 250 off the next test, they would still be making it down close to 800 on the list. THey made it near that number off the 2007 test and they've only hired 150-170 off of it. A very, very, very reliable source within the city said that up to a third of the officers could potentially leave within the next 1-3 years. THat would be very interesting for those of you trying to get on.

Anyone have an idea what kind of score (percentage wise) you need to have on the civil service exam to place in the top 500 or so.
From what I heard, it is close to 100% (since many people get extra credit points for military/residency). Not sure how accurate that is.

That would be alot of officers to replace. Are those retiring officers ?
Thats good news that you can potentially have a shot if you're in the top 800. I didn't realize that many people get eliminated.

I don't know how accurate that is. The last guy that stuck it out(and he was an alternate) started a few days late and he ranked in the 600's. He got in because someone dropped out in the first few days. I want to say he was 630 or something like that, but it was definitely not in the 700s. We did have one or two start right after him, but they each lasted a day or two.

Danny everyone that still in the academy right now is going to graduate? If not what can weed them out?
The sit-ups and the run are going to be a problem for a few, and there's a strong possibility they won't make it. If I had to guess, I'd bet that 3-5 won't make it. There's also the state written test (which you can't take unless you pass the physical) which could quite possibly disqualify one or two people. Usually, it's the physical stuff that kills people though. I'm guessing we'll graduate with around 50, but there's still 6 weeks till the state physical, so maybe the people who are deficient can make it up.
The academy does a few physical evaluations throughout the whole 6 months. During the baseline testing I failed all three events. Pushup goal was 33 in a minute, I got 22. Situps was 40 in a minute and I did 17. 1.5 mile run goal was 11:58 and I did it in 13:05. (This was about 3 weeks into the training.) I worked my tail off and now can do 43 pushups, 41-42 sit-ups, and my 1.5 mile run is at 11:26. Did pushups and situps every break, and ran six days a week. Still improving every day, btw. :)
Start training now! You can practice your pushups by rolling up a towel and placing it on the ground. Adjust yourself over the towel and when you go down make sure you keep your head looking forward and your chest hits the towel. The situps are FULL situps, make sure your fingers are interlocked and they stay interlocked, and that your elbows go past the top of your knees.

Whats all involved with the medical aspect of it all? How are the background guys? Are they sticklers for any minor things?
It's a two part process. First they send you to the medical unit to take height, weight, turn to the side and cough, etc. If you need to lose any weight before the academy they will tell you how much and the deadline for losing it.
Then they will send you to the hospital, St. Vincent's I believe, where they will do a stress test, draw some blood, take a chest x-ray, and make you blow into a tube thingy to test your lung capacity. Any negative findings and they make you get checked out by your physician, who will then have to sign off on them. When they took my blood my triglycerides were a little high
(162 vs their goal of 150). I asked my doctor about it and he said 150 is a really low standard and that I'm fit for duty. He signed off on it and I was good to go.
What is the turn around time on getting the scores for this last test saturday? around a month?

He's goning to be that person in the class asking a million "what if" questions.

The G17 is a full size handgun. The G19 is a compact. And yes you get to pick. And we're called recruits, not cadets. Get used to responding to questions like this: "Sir, Recruit Smith Sir, the answer is 'extortion'."

appologies if this has been brought up. Maybe someone knows maybe not...since they are wanting to put people through a bit faster do you think that the hiring process will be sped up once they have gone over test scores?
I know the process can take up to a year but any thoughts?
Harmody Park
10-06-2009, 10:21 AM
The process won't speed up any, even if they need people. The list is good for two years, so plan on them using the entire two years to put on classes. If you are in the top 300 or so, you more than likely will get hired within a year. Anything after that will be a crap shoot. From the 07 exam the first 300 on the list were hired within 10 months. It took 301-400 on the list 17 months from test to academy start date.

One passed, one failed. He couldn't make the run. The other guy only failed the first time because his hands came apart during the sit-ups. He blew it away the second time. What district are you in? They keep telling us we're all going to the fourth.

Thanks, I just hope (no PRAY) my LSAT score is better, we'll see. I was in the 1100ish range and I had a score in the low 80's :(
if I read it correctly a girl with a 99% was in low 200 if that matters to anyone.
I don't think the scores are posted at a website, they're at the civilservice dept of city hall rm119 from 8-4:30 m-f. I'd give them a call tho, cus they didnt even check my I'd and all of the scores were by listed by name in a big binder for anyone to look at.
Thanks for all the moral support tho, hang in there hopefuls, I'll be looking forward to hearing how the academy/field training goes.

Not too long of a wait hopefully. The next class is slated to start in early December, and it'll take them 26 weeks which would put the next class (which hopefully includes you) at around May or June of next year at the earliest. Get in shape now! The academy can be a lot of fun, especially if you are already in shape.
