Did you receive their E-mail also?

I just got it too (after about 1 month of applying online). I'll probably see you at the agility/written test on Saturday.

Most parts of Ventura county is beautiful. You have some of the nicest homes there also (MIchael's Jackson's home is around there also).

You are also in Santa Barbara, which is a beautiful beach city.

Good luck on the tests, man.

To the OP:

I am slotted for their June Academy. I can tell you that their test is hard. Start studying!! Lots of Vocab, Grammar and Mapping questions.

As for the county it is, for the most part, a very affluent area. The contract cities of the Sheriff's department are Thousand Oaks, Moorpark,Camarillo and Fillmore (may be forgetting one not sure). They also cover a decent size area surrounding the city of Oxnard. That is a very busy area to work....Gangs,Dope and lots of trouble to get into!

The county has Thousand Oaks which is always in the "top 10 Safest Cities" in America over 100,000 in Pop. Also Oxnard is the biggest city in the county (pop wise) and has many Gangs and lots of violent crime.

I have lived in Ventura County my whole life and plan on staying here forever if I can afford it. The cost of living is high but so is the quality of life! Get a wife who makes big bucks! lol

Hope that helps.....

Good luck in Feb.

The first 11 years of my marriage, we lived in and around Thousand Oaks. Even though it's an affluent area, there are pockets of affordability. They're definitely worth the time it takes to hunt them down.

Our last place was in Ventu Park on the mountain. We had oak trees and a great view of the valley. I really loved it there. My parents liked it so much, they moved to TO, too. So I still get to visit. :)

You are absolutely correct. The first thing I recalled when I read Ventura County was a friend of mine telling me that Santa Barbara was part of Ventura county.

Haha. My girlfriend (soon to be wife) was looking over my shoulder when I wrote that.....She plans on making a lot of money so we can stay in Thousand Oaks our whole life.....Fine with me!!

I was born and raised in Thousand Oaks...(East County area) The other thing worth noting is that there is a ton of LA City Cops and Firefighters who live in East Ventura County because it's close to the city but still very safe and good for family life...

I would be happy to answer any other Ventura County questions you might have....

Copp'r Penny: Thats exactly where I live!! how funny. Ya I love TO and will never leave.....(fingers crossed)

If you are serious about working there go on a ride-a-long and do the jail tour at the main jail.(The BIs love this when you go for your pre-interview) I know several deputies who work in the jails and courts, who love their jobs. I grew up in VC, for the most part it is a low crime area. County areas are the most active. Drug arrests are easy if you know where to look, but otherwise it is usually quiet. They do have a tough academy, so if you are serious about getting hired, start working out now. Good luck!

Where would you recommend buying an affordable home for a single guy with a backyard big enough to accomodate two german shepherds.

How do you set up a jail tour? Is it only for applicants?

I know ride alongs are just a matter of walking into the station (I have done two) but never heard of VCSD giving public jail tours.

Call the main jail in Ventura. They had the tours once a month, unless they got rid of them. Never hurts to call and ask.

Buying or renting?

Ventura, Camarillo, T.O, Moorpark, Simi.

All are relatively affordable now.

How much money Does this "single guy" make??

TO is not gonna be affordable for most young single guys. I would say stick to Camarillo and Moorpark. Cost of Living is high in Ventura County, no doubt about it. I would say what ever you do stay away from Thousand Oaks and Westlake Village (or get rid of the dogs because you will be renting an apartment there)

Copp'rPenny

There are pockets of affordability in TO. Look around Hillcrest and Erbes. Also, ask a Realtor about "slab foundation" homes (along Avenida de los Arboles in TO and Wendy Drive in Newbury Park). If you're worried about the foundations (some are cracked, thus the lower prices), look around Burning Tree. Those don't have the cracked foundations. They're small houses (1,500 sq feet) but nice sized yards.

Also, my old neighborhood, Ventu Park, is kind of a "shacks to mansions" kind of area. My husband liked to call it "eclectic." It's on the mountain with nice oak trees. It's outside city limits, though, so the rules aren't as strict (no requirement for earthtone paint on the exteriors, so you'll get more, eh hem, creativity).

Michael Jackson's home is in Los Olivos. No where near Montecito.

Ventura is great. I lived there for four years in the 90's and would move back in a heartbeat.

Your correct....Montecito was a guess.. I just knew for sure that it was no where near Ventura County...

I grew up in Thousand Oaks and feel the same as you do about the "hometown" I hope to never leave

I can't get rid of the dogs since they're like kids to me as I don't have any children. If I'm lucky to get hired by Ventura I would be buying a house with a down payment of about $100,000 and the only income would be from the Sheriff's salary.

VChopefull

With a down payment like that you wont have a problem. Where are you from??

Are you in backgrounds now with VCSD? Or testing in Feb?

I'm from San Diego so that's why I don't know anything about the area. I wish I could test in February, but according to the recruiter I have to wait for the April test since I started wearing contacts in August.
