What is a good watch to get for the academy? Just curious as I'm not a big watch guy.

Any G- Shock watch. Will take the beating of the academy. Got a cheap watch from walmart just in case someone forgot their watch so we wouldn't get thrashed.

These are bitchen and I see a lot of cops wearing them. Most models have every imaginable feature and if you get run over by a bus, your next of kin will still have a working watch...

PS: Good luck on the 27th!

Cheap watch from walmart is what I got. $15. I will save the money for when I pass Field Training. We had to wear our watches during PT and the first watch I used got banged up really good, stopped working.

I made sure it had night illumination, military time, and date. Make sure it has a velcro strap, not the vinyl band.

Aren't there some academies that do not allow the recruit/cadet to wear a watch unless they are class commander ?

Suunto is a good quality watch that can take a beating.

This site rocks. I have never worn a watch, I can't stand them! I never even thought about having to wear one. (on the job or in the academy)
I'll need to shop around for yet one more thing!
Good thing I found this site.
BTW- ebay has plenty of good deals on gshocks.

From experience, it's only discouraged but allowed as long as there is no hourly chime. During the pfq's we weren't allowed to wear them though.

Up until yesterday, my duty watch as been the cheapest watch I could get with the features I needed (stopwatch, countdown timer, etc.). I don't think I ever paid more than $16 for one. I considered them disposable and, after 7 years, I'm only on my third.

Yesterday my parents visited and we finished our holiday gift-giving. I received the Casio G-Shock that's been on my gift list for the last 5 years or so.

I too have heard the G-Shock's are the best that reasonable money can buy in terms of hard use. Now I'll get to find out.

Whatever watch you get make sure it doesn't have a cloth band. Your sweat juice will make it smell great. BTW what academy are you going to?

G Shock is the way to go..tough, durable, inexpensive, easy to read at night.

Rio Hondo does not allow recruits to wear them unless you are the class SGT.

Thanks for the advice. I was thinking the G-Shock would be a good one and now you all have sold me on it! Any particular model I should look at? I'm not worried about the cost. (5iveoh - I start the RSO Academy on the 27th!)

Like many others have said. G-Shock is the way to go. I have had mine for over two years now and it still works great.

Let us know when you receive it if you think it's the real deal.

Thats not a real G shock watch!

Not a huge deal because you only spent $13 on it but that is a knockoff.
