Best Buddy's Birthday!

It's been a tough year, but my best buddy "Marley" just turned 14 years old today! :D He's a bit slower, but he's happy, gets up and down the stairs pretty good and still protects us from whoever arrives at the front door (until he's had a chance to verify they're "OK"). He hates getting his picture taken, but we convinced him to put up with it just this once for the special occasion!

Note: He is a cancer survivor (fibrosarcoma) and in addition to surgical removal of the tumor, went through radiation treatment about five years ago. (Don't ask about the cost. It was worth it!) For each "dose" (five times a week for six weeks), he had to undergo general anesthesia. The lab techs who cared for him on each visit, said he required a hug everytime he woke up. We knew that to be true because he's climbed into our arms or on our lap every day since we've brought him home at eight weeks of age.

Within the last year, he's had two instances of "Canine Vestibular Syndrome" (aka: Old Dog Syndrome)- an inner ear inflammation with stroke like symptoms. We thought we were going to lose him, but the old guy's a fighter! He's a little wobbly on his feet at times (smooth surfaces), but eagerly climbs two sets of stairs to keep an eye on us and holds his tail high when he goes out back to bark out his objections to neighbors' leaf blowers.

I've never known a "spunkier" dog and every moment with him is treasured! :o
