Yes. You're not supposed to have two different insurance carriers.

I wouldn't think you would qualify for Medicaid once you are employed and have income and resources that exceed the Medicaid limits. and PS - there is nothing wrong with being covered by more than one insurance plan. Its called Coordination of Benefits, and a lot married couples have more than one plan.

i would assume that you would have to give up medicaid on the day you get sworn in. but seeing as you just startingin the process to get in you have about another year before you get called so i would not cancel now.

I believe the original post knows he has to cancel the card, the question I think he is asking, is WHEN should the card be cancelled. Before hire? or the day of hire? You don't want to cancel it thinking you about to get hired, only to find out that you didn't get hired and now you have no insurance.
I'm not sure of the answer, I never had a benefits card.

I'd cancel it after you're hired. Worst comes to worst, wait til it expires.

When I was going through the hiring process, we had to sign a paper stating we would not accept any government benefits if hired. I read articles in the paper about recruits who were fired for collecting benefits while in the academy, so get rid of it as soon as you can.

A public assistance beneficiary is under the continual and affirmative obligation to inform the dss local district of any changes in his/her income or assets which may affect his/her qualification for benefits. Failure to do so could constitute Welfare Fraud (PL Art. 158). So, its not a matter of getting new medical benefits (although, Medicaid would not like you to "coordinate" your coverage in that way) but that you have to tell them if you get a good job with benefits such as the NYPD. "Oh, I forgot to tell you that no longer need help with health insurance? Sorry about that..." Neither the fraud investigator nor NYPD would be very sympathetic.
If you live in the city, go to one of the centers and ask. If you live in Nassau, go to DSS in Uniondale. If you live in Suffolk, call 'em.

I write 2 or 3 a day. Someone said to me, I pay your salary and I was like ok and I pay your welfare.

That depends.
Are you disabled?
If so, you can qualify for Medicaid Buy-In for the Working Disabled (http://www.health.state.ny.us/health_care/medicaid/program/buy_in/index.htm). See the link for the New York State income & asset guidelines.
My guess is, if you are being sworn in as a cop, you are not disabled.
If being sworn in doesn't mean that you then have income from your job -- well, you have to give it up once your income is above the limits.
Straight Medicaid has very limited income standards. I believe it is maybe $725/month right now. After that you have to do a "spend down" -- that is, if your income, for example, is $1,000/mo., you have to pay out $275 in medical expenses before Medicaid takes over.
So, ummm, the answer is: yes, you have to give up your Medicaid. I would assume you would have good insurance coverage with your job.

Nice, and when people tell me they pay my salary I say, "I pay taxes too so I guess I'm self employed!"

Well, he doesn't cancel the card himself.
He has to report the change of income as soon as he starts work. The DHHS will take care of it from there.
Chance are he will have it for at least 30 days after he submits the income change.

I don't believe that would be considered public assistance. Are you paying a premium?
Family Health Insurance as I understand it is provided for those who don't qualify for Medicaid but don't have access to insurance any other way. It is nowhere near the same as Medicaid.
