I have lived in New York my whole life. I have a nice place to live for the last 8 years, but the taxes are unbelievable. Taxes on gas, schools, income, state, federal, alcohol, tobacco, clothes, etc. etc.

In the real world I make a decent wage and should be pretty well off. I am not here. I talked to a friend in NC and he said I would be doing great if I lived there.

Patterson proposing 88 new taxes. I cannot believe the mismagagment of this state and it ticks me off.

Join the club who packs up and moves south. I drive a diesel. The day I moved was the day that I filled up at $5.15 a gallon. I dont miss it one bit.

Yep, New York is an absolute mess. I'm glad I'm going to be moving to Virginia.

The property taxes are sickening. We're paying over 11 grand a year w/ basicly zero services. We're looking to move to Tennessee when I retire

I agree Outshined. I love New York City and New York State, but I hate the City of New York and the State of New York. LOL

Outshined....you're not alone partner. I dont recall a problem before Paterson showed up...now all of a sudden there is an all out blitz. Everyday it seems that I am going to work to pay someone else. I know that many would say...thats life...but this is crazy. Im a NYS employee which makes it worse. Im working for a state that doesnt work for me. I feel bad for the folks that dont have solid jobs. This tax garbage is no good for any of us.

The sad thing about NY is it really has some great community's it is not a bad place to live but patterson is nut's if he thinks he can add 4,000 plus in taxes and not see a mass exodus from this state.

I wish they would cut some of the multi layers of our goverment in this state and let me state That goes for fire districts and dep't as well. I will start with Greece NY because there should really be just one district here Henrietta has one fire district and does just fine. But alas in NY everyone wants their own little kingdome and fifedome no matter how much duplication and waste is involved.

Well let me start by saying that I am not a Patterson fan. However, you can't really blame this on him. He was thrown into this soup sandwich with no forewarning. The big juggernauts on Wall St. like Lehman Brothers used to generate A LOT of tax revenue for the city/ state. That is a lot of money that isn't coming in anymore. Add that with the backwards upstate economy and it is a recipe for disaster. The same stuff would be happening even if Spitzer could keep it in his pants.

I got smart and moved when the gettin' was good. I was an upstater too, having grown up in a suburb of Syracuse. (Onondaga county) Those were my stomping grounds and I will always have fond memories of that place.

The Adirondacks are a beautiful place, as were the vineyards of Ithaca and Cayuga, finger lakes hiking trails, Saratoga Springs, Tug hill, Watertown ATV and sled trails, Thousand Islands and the 6 million miles I put on Interstate 81.

Beautiful state but no longer my home. No interest, nor desire to pay out the wazoo in taxes for friggen everything. They robbed us blind in every way shape imaginable. Hell, I was losing a hundred bucks a pay period for NYS taxes. Where did it all go? Sure wasnt the thruway...Thruway's got the worst roads in the state and its a toll road. Riddle me that one. 81 is smooth in most places and puts the thruway to shame and last time I checked, it was free to drive up and down that.

This is a lot to do with the reason I moved.
Just about all of my family still lives in NY.
I loved NY, although I hated the cold weather and daily rain.
But overall, I liked NY quite a bit.
Reality however, is that it'd be extremely difficult for someone just starting out to afford anything halfway decent, let alone taxes, etc.....

Either move south or west.
I chose to move west and couldn't be any happier.

Last I checked, property taxes were well past $10,000 for my families house in NY, and its nice, but by no means a mansion or anything.
Same house, property, etc here in Las Vegas would be roughly $2,000 (give or take) A YEAR in property taxes!

Good luck to you, they do not make it easy out there.

Yeah, I really don't want to leave either but upstate especially = no good jobs except for the select few and the taxes/fees are icing on the cake. The cronyism in local govt in these parts takes my breath away.

very very true..

The fact is we have more "goverment" in NYS than most any other state and most of it a complete waste and duplication.

Erie county is a prime example of this.. instead of one central 911 center they still have most agencies doing their own dispatching circa 1980's...... hard to fathom.

Does every single town and village need it's own court? Hell no we should have gone to a district court system like NC long ago.

Does every little town need it's own school district nope.... fat chance of ever getting that changed.

Same goes with fire districts far to many......
in NYS the parks police should have been merged into the state police eons ago... just duplication that is not needed.

But rather than right size goverment all NY can come up with is more tax and spend as usual.
wait till the mass exodus hit's those that are left behind will get walloped with even more taxes...
