So I saw on craigslist an ad from John De Gutis. He offered a 100 hour unarmed training program as a Special Police Officer. I called him and did some research and it sounds a little iffy to me considering the price he wanted for the class.

From the research I found that I only get certified as a Special Police Officer after I take his class and get hired by a sponsored security firm, for example Longwood. I also heard that this training is only good for security firms itself and not particularly law enforcement. I saw online that qualifications for University/college police requires a municipal police certification and his course does not offer that.

I could not find anywhere on how to attend one of these municipal police academies and was wondering if you(s) could point me in the right direction. I am going to apply for the Boston Police Cadets also. I am just looking to get my LE career rolling and build up a strong resume/experience before I try and enter the field.

So in conclusion here are my questions...lol:

Is it worth my time/money to attend John's training?

Where can I find a municipal police academy where I can get certified for possibly a college cop job or strong resume/experience?

and...um any comments you have or questions would be appreciated too!!!

Thanks for Looking and keep up the great work!

You might want to look at being a reserve for a neighboring town or your own. Also look at towns like Nantucket which hire people for the summer. For a boatload of info check out www.masscops.com and search away!!

DO NO SPEND YOUR MONEY on this class. Mr. Degutis is a political appointee with NO police experience. He somehow attained the position of Director of the regional police academy in Plymouth. I amm going to suggest that you stay away from this program. This is not going to help you with your LE career.

And you are correct about the certification for colleges. There are many colleges out there that require the Full-Time police academy. The rest typically require the SSPO program which is conducted at the SP academy.
PM me with your background and I may be able to point you in a better direction.

Yeah, because DeGutis doesn't hire actual law enforcement personel to teach his classes.

Listen, I agree with your assertion but your reasoning is flawed. Political appointee or not, DeGutis runs academies that thousands of people would give their first born to get a slot in. I attended Plymouth for the full-time academy and he never tought on class. And the academy is an actual academy controlled by the Municipal Police Training Committee which sets up training standards for all municipal officers in the state.

Will this help you in your quest to get on the job? Maybe in terms of the job it will help you land to gain expeirience, but it's just one small piece of the puzzle. Note that SSPO's are the appointments given to most private college police and security organizations in the state, which coincidentally seem to be the only organizations hiring right now. And while I'm not familiar with this particular program and what it will certify you for, I wouldn't knock it simply because of who is in charge of the academy itself.

Like said above, I think looking into a reserve program would be the best bet. I am currently attending the R/I intermittent police academy now in reading MA and my employer is sending me, but most have got a sponsorship through a police department(they all have to pay out of pocket its about $500 - $600). Correct me if i'm wrong, but i've been told once you have R/I academy you can work part time/reserve at a PD that has a reserve program on board. I plan to do it myself to build my resume as a I continue to work as a SSPO at my current employer once i'm done with the academy. Also look into town that are non-civil service that are hiring part time because some of them hire from their current reserve officer pool.
