Ahh yes, this time last year I was about the graduate the police academy and ready to hit the streets!!

Of course I've fought the urge to be a 1 year hair bag, but I want to reflect on one thing.

Less than two years ago, you'd come onto this website, or any other website and see all this negativity about NYPD and how "dumb" we all were for taking the job at 25K. I remember some of the remarks... "You guys are idiots" or "You could make more at McDonalds".

I have to admit while I tried not to think about it, I thought for a couple moments that maybe I did make a mistake, maybe NYPD wasn't the right route.

Then the end of the academy came and a new contract with a nice raise was in the works, got that raise and a second raise came right after!!!

Now a year later I work in one of the best boroughs in NYPD, make just as much, if not more than my counterparts elsewhere in the state, and I don't care what anyone says, being an NYPD Cop comes with a sense of prestige that you don't get anywhere else.

So now look at the posts here, talking about hoping to get IN the academy, imagine that!?? I never thought I'd see the day that people hope to be reached on their lists for the academy. The day that young men and women had a PASSION to become NYPD.

So all my brother's and sister's out their who wear the uniform already. Stand tall, be proud and enjoy this while we can!

congrats on getting off probation (about another week right?). Stay safe out there, and I hope you continue to like it.
Remember there will always be someone who doesnt like it, or has its problems with the job. As long as you are happy, and doing what you want to do, forget about them. Because in the end you know you made the right choice.

I'm glad you are enjoying it, but remember you are are still very knew on this job. In a span of the week we has two cop killers get away with Murder and another resulted in a mistrial. That shows you what the people of NYC think about us.

As far as everything else you say it seems like your drinking the kool aid. We certainly don't make as much as other surrounding jurisdictions and the prestige that this job had is gone. Our Mayor has been quoted as saying that Sanitation workers have a more dangerous job then we do. How in the hell is this a prestigious job where anybody with a pulse can get on.

I think he has another 6 months of probation. I enjoyed my time in the NYPD and I hope you continue to enjoy the next 18.5 years .

At the time I switched from City Corrections to NYPD the 26k starting salary didn't bother me because I just looked at it as less competition...also because my DOC pay transfered over to NYPD {lol}. But now with the pay raise and the state of the economy people are fighting tooth and nail to get in. I had a friend I tried to talk to into coming on with me but he kept saying he wanted to wait till NYPD got a new contract...now he's on the outside looking in.

King, I tried to do that with a buddy of mine as well. It was like talking to a wall. Wouldnt hear anything of it due to the starting pay. He recently got laid off from his job and is calling me daily asking when nypd is hiring again.

I feel for him but the smart ones jumped on board when the time was right, eventhough the pay was wronnnnnnnng.

Congrats on getting off probation now you are in, lay low for the next 20 and your good.

However for me I think I still made the right choice in not taking the NYPD to become a Port Authority police officer. I could have been in the NYPD from 2004 but I waited hoping and praying PAPD would give another test and the finally did in 2007 and lucky for me I passed and went through the entire process in 10 months. I say my patients paid off, now I'm a recruit in the 111th class waiting for graduation day to come in April.

Hopefully I will get the Bus Terminal command then we will see each other at MCB from time to time lmao

Look for the guy with the sloppy mullet

TD 2 is actually out of Canal Street in lower Manhattan.

Yes, overtime is plentiful, and when we work in lower manhattan we do get a lot of the tourists taking pictures. But I've also worked in upper manhattan quite often, and might be transferred to TD 3 (145/st.nick) within a couple weeks. It's much different up their then lower manhattan, but I'm not worried bout that, I like it up there just as much as I like it at 34/7.

You're on probation for 2 years from your hire date. But keep in mind any chart days, vacation days or lost time extends it, so you end up being on probation for 2 years and change.

Yup, so if you go sick for two months. That's two months added on to your probation period of 20yrs.

Question: How does vacation time work? I'm assuming that you can't just get any 1 week period off because if that were the case, a lot of people would just take off Christmas week, 4th of July week, as well as other popular vacation time periods. Do they have an allotted amount of vacation slot's open at each precinct, and they are filled in order of seniority; or is it some other way that it's determined?

Well...

It all starts out with a squad. You will be placed in a squad in a precinct and there will be other cops with different appointment dates. Those with a older appointment date will up on the list and have dibs on the good weeks off. It then trickles down to the youngest appointment dates. Now... lets say you have 5 cops that have appointment dates from 01/01/08, it gets further broken down by EXAM and LIST number. Older the exam and higher on the list, the better the picks.
