Find another roommate. Immediately. Unless you really don't intend to become a cop, as a former BI, I wouldn't give you a second look, no matter how stellar your background may be.

It very well could be a detriment to your application process. However, although he is under investigation does not make him a felon. That title comes with a conviction. Wait until the trial is over. He may end up with a misdemeanor conviction. You never know what the end result will be until it comes.

Although difficult, if a felony is the end result, I would suggest severing ties with your friend.

We had a person on probation living with a parolee. That person got fired.

Yea I'm not living with him, nor have I. So he's not on any of my apps.

I'm not completely ignorant, so sarcasm isn't completely necessary.

Waiting until everything was said and done was likely what I planned on doing. I just wanted to get some intelligent insight. I'm already in LE, but I forget if there was a section in the packet asking if you associate with known felons. I know it asked about gang members however.

well, since you work for Probation, I STRONGLY suggest you look up your agencies policy on associating with known criminals, felons, gang members ect.....

Its a fireable offense for LASD (ie: they WILL fire you for it here)......and even civil service wont save your hide.......

Yea I'm gonna run it by one of our union guys to see what's what. I'm hoping the guy gets through this without a felony. Either way I'm not gonna put his name on any paper I turn in.

Third question? Are you on probation with probation? Nevermind.....

Back to topic:
Bad idea. You can't chooooose your relatives but you can chooooose your friends.

Don't be so high and mighty. It's hard to turn your back on someone you've known most your life. Everyone has their ups and downs.

We should just agree to disagree.

I'm not going to move in with him. I'm not going to associate with him until things clear up.

There. Bro.

It has nothing to do with high and mighty. It has to do with integrity and the ability to make sound decisions...decisions that someday may save your life.

This decision should be simple but you apparently are hesitant or apprehensive for whatever reason.

Good luck.

Can't believe this, your words disclose you as more a social worker than Cop material, don't give up your probation job. Try not disclosing your friends problems and see where that gets you. Yeah, hard to turn your back on a friend, but.............Where does the duty to yourself fit in?

You are judged by the company you keep. I had very good friends that chose a different patch, so I severed ties. Not easy, but necessary.

+1

it sucks but it is absolutely necessary. you feel like you're turning your back on your "bro's" but the bottom line is a 30 year career is more worth it. it isn't your fault if your friends can't pull their head out and grow up. DO NOT let them drag you down with them.

There are a few people I will not hang out with anymore because I know they have bad habits (smoking the funny stuff). They aren't "bad" people - they work hard, and that's probably the worst thing they'll ever do, but I just can't associate with them. I'll be arresting people for weed, guaranteed. If I run into them while I'm with my other friends at a public place, like a bar, so be it. I won't go to a party or specifically go to see them, though. I just absolutely cannot be taking an chances like that.

Sometimes it sucks being the odd man out; everyone else is going somewhere to hang out, and I'm the one saying, "no thanks, I'm calling it a night" I know in the end I'm making the right choice. Yeah, I'll probably lose some friends along the way. A true friend will respect that and hopefully realize they should change their ways.

I don't want to be sitting in front of a BI when he or she asks me when was the last time I was around where I knew drugs were present and I say, "oh, probably last week" Yeah okay - then I'll feel a boot on my rear end. :D

Getting into the career I want is going to be hard, and it won't get any easier as time goes on.

COJO2
12-30-2008, 12:37 AM
What would/have you told these friends regarding why you can't hang out with them anymore?

I really don't have any friends in my circle that have drug or legal problems. Just this guy the thread is about.

Not much to tell them: I know what you do, and I can't be around it. I'm going to be cop, and cops don't hang out with pot heads. I'm not going to be coy with them.

"Hey, aren't you coming with us?" "No, because I know so-and-so will be there and I know they might be 'smoking' up there, have fun"

They know where I stand.

"guess what?" He's no longer your FRIEND( unless you want to live like him- which ,sooner or later ,will happen)

Remember rolling to a call in back 10 yrs ago in my area- radio call was about a bunch of knuckleheads stealing computers from a nearby warehouse.Funny thing was that the emphasis in the radio call was that the computer were being "left outside by the company".

Turns out that we arrested 6 local gangbangers stealing old, OUTDATED PCs used by the airlines to log on and print out or input customer reservations- much of it was JUNK! but guess WHO was sitting in the back of the car used by these fools? a 19 yr old who had just been accepted to the U.S. coastguard academy! Kid washed away his FUTURE cause he wanted to hang out with his "homies".

Sorry, unless you are an orphan, you had better start growing up and making ADULT choices. The things you do now will effect your future, and friend or no friend, sometimes its plain smart to cut ties.I grew up in south central L.A. ( not !@#!@%% "south L.A.") Do I know alot of thugs and jailbirds? - yup, grew up with a dozens of them. But I don't associate with them anymore, 'cause the job I do and what I represent means MORE..........

You never said "Will this hurt me..." but you did say "Would this put me in jeopardy," which is synonymous.

Your question is asked and answered. Everything else is just you arguing because you are not getting the answer you wanted.

I worked one of the prisoner vans on New Year's eve. First transport was for a guy and his buddy from a fancy nightclub for public intox. One was a PD applicant with the academy starting in three weeks. The other a parolee. Buddies. The applicant cussed me out and threw up all over my van. The parolee kept yelling that he buddy was going to end up being my partner someday.

I think it's safe to say the applicant just destroyed his chance of being a cop ever.

We will find out.
