Hey guys, I'm hoping to take the 2 week Equivalency of Training Academy to transfer to Florida in April. The agency I'm looking to go to is a small department so they won't sponsor me and my Pct won't let me take 2 weeks off for the 2 week academy and then a few days later take a few more days off so I can take the Florida State exam. So my options are to resign and go down there and hope for the best. I have family down there and have talked to the Department several times and it shouldn't take long for me to get on with them. I know some of you will say don't resign etc but thats not what I'm looking for, my mind is made up and my wife and I want to relocate and Florida is where we have always wanted to live and we have family there. I have had a few buddies who have resigned from NYPD because they got hired by upstate departments. When they resigned they had to voucher their guns (because technically you are no longer a PO) and when they had their new ID and Shield from their new dept they went back to the pct and they got their gun/guns back. So when I resign I'm going to have to voucher my guns also, however worse case scenario is that it may take a few months to get hired and have the chance to come up to retrieve my guns. I'm afraid that after a few weeks my guns will be sent to Manhattan and I'll probably never see them again. I've heard once your duty weapon is sent down to Manhattan you will never see it again. I'm really concerned about my backup since I paid for that. And why not want your duty weapon also if you are entitled to it? So has anyone else been down this road? I talked to the LT of my local department (I live upstate) and he said I could voucher my guns there and they'll hold onto them for however long they need but does anyone know if NYPD will allow me to do that? I mean if I can show that my firearms are vouchered for safekeeping at my local police department I don't see why not but who knows. Not sure if NYPD says you HAVE to voucher them there. I'm hoping not. Any help would be great, thanks!

Your backup is YOUR gun. You paid for it. They have no right to keep it. The guns are vouchered for safekeeping and not for any other reason.

If they do not give you the 2 weeks that you need, tell them you wish to resign right there and then. Im pretty sure they will beg for you to stay and give you your wish.

NYPD also switched the rules a couple of times for duty guns. It use to be after probation the gun is yours, then it use to be after 5 years of service.. now who knows if its back to probation or not.

Well honestly I'm neither, but my buddy and I went through the academy together (July 2007) and he got hired upstate in January 2008, only one month after graduation and he was able to pick up his gun once he showed his new police ID. Do you think it is dependant on the precinct?

unfortunately ShadowWarrior did not have good news for me... So at least for now I'm stuck here....

Anyway... For what its worth.... My friend left with 3 years on, vouchered his guns .. and became a teacher..... (10 months later he came back Although he regrets it) He has all his same guns and same vest..

If you leave you must leave properly... You must request an exit interview. this can be done the same day you go to the desk officer. If your C.O. is not in then the duty captain will come.. If you don't then it will be considered leaving with out Commissioners approval... which will be a negative for your future... Additionally in case you did not know.... You have a year to come back if you leave... ONLY if you finish probation.... otherwise you can come back but you WILL be required to complete a whole academy again. Additionally you have to make your intent to come back2 to 3 months prior to the end of what would be your 1 year mark.. other wise you will not have enough time to complete the process of getting back on the job (as I was told by that same friend mentioned earlier)......

As we talked about earlier.... This test is different to say the least... Most NYPD pass it but usually it takes btwn 1 to 3 times to get that "most" number.

Florida only really requires you to complete the HIGH LIABILITY portion of the 2 week course which on my course was only 1 of the two weeks.. (I do recommend taking both weeks though) I would recommend seeing if you can get your vacation picks switched to the two weeks you need.. most people don't want this early in the year anyway...

Anyway...... Good luck with you decision and CONGRATULATIONS .....

Thank You! I am most likely going to this academy that is april 13-23 and the state exam is the 29. The course includes the high liabilities PLUS 2 state exam reviews and 2 state mock exams to see how you are doing. I also have obtained in depth study packets for the Florida State exam. God I hope I don't fail the state exam so I will be studying as hard as I can. I will try for my vacation picks, but like I said I doubt it but we'll see. My admin LT does not allow us to swap vac picks. His motto is if you don't have a stripe on your arm, get out of his office. (stripe meaning 5 year mark)

not to change the thread, but if u are looking to transfer to another department, lateral or not, will the nypd release your records to the dept. you are looking to switch to? for example, i am looking into a federal position. if they were to investigate me, would they release my information to the federal dept.?

Did you see if you could take a leave of absense?

when they call your current employer, what do they usually look for? just to verify your employment, and performance?

I resigned when I was on probation, and my admin. sgt walked me through the whole process. He said I have a year to come back. Not sure about getting my gun back though, but a friend from my command told me he knows lots of guys who left for the port authority or whatever, and they just brought their shield and i.d. from their new dept. down to 1pp and got their guns back. However, I've also recently heard that the NYPD just recycles guns turned in by resigning members (i.e. gives them to teh next recruit class) because they are too cheap to buy new ones.

FLORIDA;

My family lived in Jupiter Island, Florida for several years.

We moved back to NJ when my Mother complained that the only decent high school for me to attend was 40 miles ONE WAY from our home, with NO bussing available.
Plus she had to drop off my younger Brother on the way down to Cardinal Newman HS.

EVERYONE was happy to move back out of the heat, humidity, no see'ems, and other critters...

Regarding the bug ........ if you have a friend with a permit just have him put your gun on it and have him hold it for you.

Or better yet give it to a fellow Officer to hold!!!

First off...do not give the guns to a friend with a permit or another department, this rules of this job say you turn it into them. anything else, you will be marked as resigning without permission, almost like getting fired. (And if you are resigning for another dept, who cares about the guns, the new department will give you a new one, let the city keep your gun!)

Why did the Admin deny two weeks in April?, I could see denying a rookie two weeks in July, but April? Is there more to the story? One poster wrote:

"If they do not give you the 2 weeks that you need, tell them you wish to resign right there and then. Im pretty sure they will beg for you to stay and give you your wish."

Try that and he will probably tell you have a good life and not to let the door hit you in the azz on the way out. Most Admin Lts do not care if you resign or not, either way, it is not going to make or break his day.

Did you have a PBA delegate go in and talk to him first, or did you go into the Lts office and plead your case by yourself. That is what the PBA delegates are for. If the Admin Lt is a d*%k and you went in there unarmed, who can you blame now? I would try having a PBA delgate go into his office with a cup of coffee and start this conversation over again.

Remember, resign the way the rules say to do it, if you are off probation, you have one year to come back,(I know, you already made up your mind), but it is nice to keep that door open. I knew over 60 guys that resigned NYPD for other depts, and I know of 6 that came back-4 were from Florida, for the same reasons another poster wrote.

Florida;

You didn't mention the area of Fla. It's a big state with many different regions, cultures, weather.

I can suggest that you, if you haven't already, WAIT, go down there/wherever IN THE SUMMER, especially if you are going to be in south or interior Fla.

Also didn't mention if you have kids. Remember that ALL Florida schools are under construction 12 months a year. Most decent schools are either private prep or religious based and HARD to get into without a $donation.

Seasons can be defined as; hot/really hot, humid/raining...
