COP CADET'S GUN STOLEN

December 23, 2008

The gun and badge of a Police Academy cadet moonlighting as a pizza deliveryman were stolen in an armed robbery on Long Island - and he was put on desk duty for violating rules regarding second jobs, sources said yesterday.

Shamsher Dhillon, 25, of Richmond Hill, Queens, was delivering pizzas for Domino's in Huntington Station Saturday night when two men - one brandishing a rifle - approached and demanded money, the sources said.

Dhillon pulled out his gun and fired a shot, but was struck on the head, and the two men stole his gun, badge, wallet and cellphone.

Dhillon was placed on modified duty because cadets are not allowed to have second jobs. Sources said Dhillon, who is slated to graduate next week, had only recently taken the job because his mother needed financial help.

Remember in the academy... when they say there will always be that one guy that gets jammed up within their first week... well... please try not to be that guy when you graduate.

I wish this kid the best but I dont see him keeping his job.

LOL.
I know the kid.
Good kid, he's small like 5'0 110pounds soak and wet.

Freaking newspaper people, we're not even cadets.
I didn't know we wore light blue shirts.

You have to love reporters... Great fact checking... Why don;'t you just call him a PAA or perhaps a chaplian no wait maybe a captain..

He is a RECRUIT (or at least he was) not a cadet... cadets are college students with part time jobs, no authority, and especially no GUN ... a recruit is a student COP....

But hey, what the heck, whats in a name anyway.. From now on that person will no longer be called a reporter.. they will be called a Literary License Slanderer.

That really sucks to be honest, you guys make what, like 30k/year and have to live there? No freakin wonder he got a second job, and if I was a pizza man, you can bet I'd be carrying too.

Sucks.

They had gun and shield day last week so he does have his gun and shield even though he has not graduated

unfortunatley, he'll probably lose the pizza gig, too. most of these large pizza chains have policies against carrying a firearm while working for them.

He violated policy by having a second job, yes. But even 40k in NYC isnt that great. Other than that, he did the right thing. He defended himself - which we ALL would have done, admit it or not.

I hope he doesnt get canned.

This article is useless (No offense to the OP but to the writer). What WAS his status? Was he in the Academy or had he graduated. Was he in FT. On his own but still on probation? WTF? If he has not graduated how does he have a gun and badge? How can you do desk duty at the Academy? What happened to the Pizza?

I see what you did there.

hahahahaha

I'm glad the guy wasn't hurt but how was the shooting justified? He's a recruit working a second job and using his service weapon on said second job.
Hey...maybe he gets lucky and gets through with his job, but I find hard to believe after what happened to the FTU guy in Midtown South with the bike rider.

Your joking right? Of course he was justified. Defense of self or a third person IE SELF DEFENSE! Doesn't matter where he was or what he was doing. Per the CPL he's covered. As for the NYPD charges if there are any thats a different story.

Maybe justified was a bad choice of words...if I was in his shoes I'd done the same thing. But putting himself in that position was his mistake. I doubt highly that he was given permission to work a second job....a job where he carried his service weapon. Like someone wrote earlier...sucks to be him.

The shooting is 100% justified, but I highly doubt he is keeping the NYPD job. He is lucky the perps didn't kill him just for the fact that he was a cop.

Dude....I worked as a Federal LEO in DC for 37K (GS-7) and had to have a second job just to eat......

NYC is x2 as expensive as DC/NVA is......

All the NYPD guys know live with their familes for the first 3-4 years on the job..... Great way to live...

Further, this guy was caring for his Mom....so one can only suspect he was already living home....

Sad state of affairs in NYC.........and this kid's going to get canned for trying to do the right thing.....

he went against policy of having a 2nd job? What is most likely the sentense or punishment for that?

i think this pay increase is a ligitimate number, it sure beats 26k or whatever it was. it also helps when you live at home and have no expenses of course. remember people, you will always start in the bottom with any job you have. you just gotta move up.

I just read this entire thread post by post. It's a lot just going through the process of becoming a leo with NYPD. I dont know this first hand but I've read enough threads to know what to expect. Then to end up working a second job just to keep the bills paid to help the woman who brought you into the world which I'm sure was the happiest mom in the world when he made it into the academy. I hope things work out for this guy and ends up keeping his job.

That's still a sh itty starting pay for a LEO....

I lived in DC on less than that and had to have 2 jobs just to survive till I got promoted to a GS-9......then I kept it to have the little extra things in life till I made my 11......

And the Cost of Living in NYC area is a hell of a lot more than DC/NVA is....

None of us for the most part (I suspect)... But one still has to live...and eat....and be able to pay rent....and all that....

It's disgraceful that NYC pays you guys that crappy.... Another reason Bloomy is such an asshat.....

All the guys I know on the job there are ready to retire and get the hell out of NYC because they get treated like azz....

Hell, look at what Bloomy has IAB guys doing now....Citing and towing illeaglly parked Police cars.......

I am sure this year during Police Week, they will have 50-100 IAB guys down there floating around....and watching for NYPD Officers getting out of hand.....

I was there about 2 years back. and yes there was a good mount of IAB guys there in uniform keeping an eye out. BUT that's only because of the action of guys in past years. (getting drunk, running around the hotel at all hours and making a mess of the hotel and rooms) that's why we are not allow to have shields out(unlike everyone else) or wear any shirts or uniforms with NYPD on it.

I do realize whey IAB is there....because of past mis-deeds of others (though...sliding down the bannisters using beer as your "water" at the Grand Hyatt would have been a real hoot.... :D)

But that was 10-15 years ago......don't you think the admin of NYPD and the City should start to trust folks again...?

Just amazes me how they can't trust folks that they give gun/badge to and allow them to take away someone's freedom.....or perhaps take a life if the situation warrants.....
