New NYPD Recruiting Class Saved
NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- With a smile as bright as a child on Christmas morning Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly happily unwrapped a gift for the NYPD Thursday -- the new recruiting class will hit the streets after all next year.
"Apparently there has been an agreement to have 250 recruits in January and at least 250 in July," Kelly said.
Like many city agencies the police department faced devastating budget cuts, which threatened the entire recruiting class.
A thankful Kelly says the infusion of cash will keep the academy going.
Council Speaker Christine Quinn handed out the $20 million present to the NYPD, spending in an area that was going to get the ax.
