My police department decided to put me in SWAT like "Special Response Team". Its not fully like U.S. SWAT but has similar rescue and other kinds of operations. As you know i am a new cop and this decision makes me little scared. I dont know much about it. I dont know what to do now. Opinions and Suggestions needed!!!

O'siyo NeoCop,
Training time!
Most likely you will do this on your own time:
1. Pull out each piece of equipment to be used by the special team and learn 100 % how each one works and its location (in the building or in the vehicle).
2. Check out every weapon that may be used, and clean it, breaking down the weapon as far as the armorer will allow.
3. Assure the weapons to be used are stored away from the common-issue weapons used by patrolmen. You want only the weapons you know are clean and serviceable to be issued instantly to your team.
4. Read every operations plan. Store buildings, grounds, aircraft layouts and maps inside the operations plans, so that when a book is delivered to the site, the best layouts and maps always are there too.
In short: Practice with all your equipment.
Be expert with every weapon.
Know your written guidelines.

What Jim said may be hard, but he's right. I've been on our SWAT team for five years and I agree with him 100%. You have to train, train, train and then train some more. Our team isn't full-time. We are on call at all times and each of us works a regular shift in some division of our departments. But we do train together at least one day, 10 hours, each month. We would like to have more training time than that, but that's all the beancounters will give us. In addition to that, most of us do things, like shooting, on our own time. You have to be prepared, because when the decision has been made to call you, the s#$@ has already hit the fan. You train this much so that when the time comes you will react like it is second nature. I can't speak for Jim, but I'm not trying to be hard about my comments. I'm only trying to make you think so you will stay alive. I know from experience. I was shot two months ago during a SWAT deployment. If my team hadn't had the quality and quantity of training that we have, I probably would have bled to death on the scene. Good luck to you and if you need anything please let me know. I'll help however I can,
Mike

NeoCop,
I think it would be prudent for you to contact the active-duty officers on this list who are directly involved in such training. Myself, I will defer to them, because although I've been a trainer and run such teams (US Army Military Police SRT), I have been retired since 1986.
My information and style are way out of date. You want the best; These folks, like Mike know whats going on in the field.
It makes sense to defer to them.

your agency sould have a designated mailbox for upcomming training events. If they don't you should start one. This way you can piece through them on down time and perhaps sign yourself up for some ERT training seminars. The CJIS system usually has numerous teletypes during the weekdays.

That information is on a need to know basis....and you don't need to know.
