 I see this time and time again on COPS, SPEEDERS, etc.
LEO's continueously touch the rear of the vehicle while they walk up to it after a traffic stop. My first thought is they want to see if it is running But, then i wonder if you can tell by placing your hand (sometimes in a glove) on the rear corner of a vehicle for a split second. is it a grounding tyupe of thing, it really drives me crazy because it is not all the time, and i dont know why it is done.
Any type of clarification as to what they are doing and why would be greatly appreciated.

I don't imagine you will get a straight answer...as we don't or shouldn't discuss tactics on a public forum.

It is two things, 1) to ground any possible static electricity b) A hyper extension of the fingers and cleaning off the glaze from the donut they just finished.;)

And if it really drives you crazy, maybe you should examine your driving habits so you don't get pulled over so much

Well, occasionally I pick my nose and I'll intercept a car just so I can wipe my finger on something other than my stations' car.

That being said, I touch the trunk to check for trunk monkeys, especially armed ones. They are becoming a real problem.

My boss says that I drive around all day with my thumb up my butt, this way I can wipe it off on the car and I can mark for easy identification if I stop it again.

I touch them because I've always had a fetish of grabbing the arse end of a female cars. Go get a manly car, and you won't have that problem.

When you ride around all day with little to do, you sometimes find yourself picking your nose, and I hate to be grabbing a person's drivers license and reg with a big juicy one on my finger tips, so I wipe it on his/her left corner. It's universal. If I see other boogers there, I know this one is building a record.

If it's especially bloody, I'l maybe start my wipe on the tailight.

It used to be about the cows. However, more and more frequently we've been getting intel on trunk monkeys

The cows and monkeys have formed a temporary alliance, as they have similar criminal goals. What I've heard in my area is that the cows are the mooovers and shakers, and are using the monkeys as their enforcers.

The badgers even told me that there is a small group of monkeys that will fling feces for a fee. They are using large-caliber cow flops that are generally untraceable, due to the high amount of deformity on impact.

Around here we have lots of errant badgers causing problems. Like the monkey, the badgers use car trunks as a primary means of travel.

+1...BTW how is this such an intriguing question anyway?

Nice going tipping them off, now they'll start crouching down in the back seat. Damn, dirty primates.
