Pretty sure you can forget July academy, this blows for newly hired cops too.

Geez...... I don't think it'll effect police officers though... Possibly cadets, school safety, traffic...
Back to NYC

The city will never lay off cops again. This is a political move. By threatening layoffs for police, fire, etc., Bloomberg hopes to get more support for congestion pricing and other pet programs of his that will (allegedly) fix the budget.
Also, the structure of the NYPD is so different from back then. Back in 1975 when the last layoffs happened, the department was mostly patrol, with a smattering of specialized units. Today the department is mostly specialized units. We have cops in Afghanistan, Spain, and whatnot. We have specialized this and specialized that, and a legion of cops doing bureaucratic work at 1PP and in the commands. If there's fat to be cut, it's not going to be cut from the ranks of cops who actually go out and patrol...unless it's done in combination with chopping down some of these inside units and specialized units (i.e., cut down the 1PP staff by shifting a bunch of those guys back into patrol precincts). Kelly and Bloomberg simply won't be able to justify the number of cops at 1PP, overseas, etc. while asking for hundreds or thousands of patrol cops to hand in their guns and shields.

According to what I read in the Post, all city agencies have to submit their cuts by 12/21. So we should know soon (presumably...anything can change) where PD will make its cuts. One would think that July's Academy is definitely in jeopardy. I really don't see PD laying off officers when all they have to do is not put through a July Academy. (Regretfully of course) Yet again, what do I know?

Geez. Possibly traffic...
I would think they would be the first to go, but didn't the city just hire like 300 new Traffic Agents?

O wow i hope it doesn't happen. Hope it doesn't cause the cancellation of the July Academy.

and school safety, they're still in academy with their white shirts and I see them everyday because I'm in the 13th... hopefully these lay offs are just threats... but those words coming from popeye's mouth, doesn't make me happy...

I got caught up in the 1975 layoffs and wound up in Florida...Glad I came here (with alot of other guys)....Just remember...Traffic generates income for Chitty Hall, cops don't unless you are a summons wh0re. Hey zeroryde...I grew up in Stuyvesant Town and could walk to the PA. I hope is hasn't turned into sh1thole like so many other places.

I think you are mistaken because civil service law dictates that lay-offs must be made in order of seniority. Last on the job, first off the job. Patrol generally has the cops with the least amount of time, so that's who will get cut first. Some of those in the special units and with the nice inside gigs would cover patrol. The city is not allowed to cut some guy with 15 years who answers a phone somewhere in 1PP and leave a guy with 2 years working a sector on. A cop's assignment has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not he gets cut; appointment date then exam and list numbers dictate that.

hey guys.. with all this talk about possible layoffs in the nypd and hiring freezes in some local depts. in ny, how do you think other depts. are handling their hiring processes? i see alot of departments on their sites still post opening positioning, however, do guys think other depts. throughout the country are still "hungry" for hiring new officers? states such as florida, carolinas, maryland etc.

The "generally" was on hold for psych so I am sure this 'guy' is similar....
The NYSP class just started did not reach anywhere near 1,000 just FYI.
The NYSP forum suggests looking again at your list number in March/09, sometime after more military tests/credits/points are added to the current list.

Bigwill, I like your play on words. Anyway my heart will always be with State Police whether it be in any State. To bad I wasn't in the military to get the points added to my score, i heard some guys made a killing with those points.

I would never begrudge a veteran some type of preferential hiring in the civilian civil service world.
I would make a suggestion to "Flawed", set your alarm, get up early tomorrow. Walk into your local USMC recruiting office and sign UP !
Have the Gunny Sgt "guarantee" you MP as you MOS.
By the time you are done at Paris Island and with MP training your enlistment will be just about up and Obama will have drawn down all the forces in Iraq and Afganistan.
You have a job for the next two years, so no worries there.
You get MP on your resume for LE jobs.
You get your points to add to your score in the various State Police jobs you have applied for along the Eastern Seaboard.
You move up the eligibility list numbers by thousands.
And you can save $ by dropping your Internet provider for the next 6 months as you transit thru USMC training.
Sounds like a plan to me......good luck and Semper Fi !

The USMC is just a gift that keeps on giving....
I note the the "gener"...whoops....."Flawed" hasn't responded so hopefully he is enroute to his USMC recruiter.
Here are more 'benefits' cheerfully given by the USMC.
He will be in great shape for the JST, may even set new record !
ESPECIALLY the trigger pull, if Obama keeps the troop levels up ?
He gets to fire lots more than 10 rounds with the M-4.
With the new $ levels from the GI Bill he will be able to afford a house within the required areas as real estate continues to fall in value.
With his 'high and tight' cut he avoids civilian hair cuts for 6 months or so.
Has an off duty income from spit shining other recruits shoes in the Academy, doesn't need O/T.
If more classes are postponed he can use the GI Bill for Law School.
Semper Fi and goodbye

Heck a fine recuit like the .......nah won't make the same mistake twice..Flawed would be recognized at Basic and sent to Quantico for OCS almost as the rest of his class heads out on the bus for advanced 'ground' training.
Few months at OCS and then Platoon Leader class and he is walking tall with the sword in his hand !
Leading from the front !
Heck with the USMC his psych hold is an asset !
One of Brother's roomies at USNA is prior USMC enlisted, picked USMC ground after graduation in May. So he goes to Quantico for TBS and then Platoon Leader Class, maybe Flawed can room up with him and bar cruise on weekends.

hahaha sounds like a good plan. I've always liked the Marine Corps, only problem is that I have to take care of my mother. If I don't get on any police force by May of this year I believe i shall drift further to the Corp and maybe find a solution for the mother.
