I see that NY is testing for the position of Campus Security Officer...not a police position, obviously, but I'm wondering about trying it as a possible interim thing until I get hired in a LE capacity somewhere.
Does anybody know what they mean when they say in the Minimum Qualifications:
a current New York State Security Guard Registration number or current New York State Security Guard Photo ID issued by the New York State Department of State
I know the Security Guard Registration number involves taking the 8 hour course, but what about the Security Guard Photo ID? Where (or how) do you get that, and does it involve any training?

You can get the photo once your done with your course.
Minimum means just that, you need at least that to be considered for the position. You may have more qualifications but you need at least the minimum to be considered.

when you take the 8 hr course, you should be provided all the paperwork to send into the nys dept. of state (fingerprint cards, etc.), and for a fee the course provider may offer to take care of the paperwork for you. a couple weeks after you complete the 8 hr and send in your paperwok, you recieve your guard card (photo id) in the mail issued by the nys dept of state that uses your dmv photo.

I think when you complete the 8 hour course you are issued a NYS Security guard photo ID. It is a NYS ID which looks like your drivers license and from what I recall they use your photo on file with DMV. I did security work years ago so things may have changed but that is the best I can recall.

Yeah, you have to take the course and where ever you take it they should have the forms for you to fill out plus you have to get finger printed.

This job is the Dispatcher Position for the New York State University Police. You will be required to obtain a NYS Security Guard License due to the fact that you can be utilized outside of the dispatch area, I.E. Library Foot Patrol during finals and other fixed posts that do not require a police officer. Make sure you are proficient with your grammar, spelling and typing abilities. After 1 year of service, you become permanent, and will be eligible to take the University Police Officer I exam on the Promotional list, which will guarantee you will be called as long as you do not fail the exam.

Yes, this is the one I'm talking about. What's confusing me is the first paragraph, which applies to me because I have no prior LE experience:
Minimum Qualifications
On or before February 7, 2009, you must have:
Either 1. a current New York State Security Guard Registration number or current New York State Security Guard Photo ID issued by the New York State Department of State. You must enter your Registration/ID number on your application. In addition, you must have one year of subsequent Security Guard experience.
IOW, you have to have the 8 Hour Pre-Assignment Training Course completed in order to get the Registration # and Photo ID. Yet it seems to contradict itself when it says that you have until Feb. 7 to do that, but you must enter the # on the application --- which has to be submitted by Jan. 5. ????
And the final sentence says that you need one year of experience, meaning that this is not an entry-level position at all, correct?
I'm just wondering if I'm reading this correctly before I call Civil Service.

The way I read it is that you "having to have one year experience as a security guard" implies that you already have a security guard license. You are to put the license number on the application and mail it in by the deadline.

In NYS it is not mandatory to have a Security Guard License to be a security guard, But since this is a NYS Job they require that you have one.
I worked 3 different loss prevention (security) jobs during college, before becoming a cop, and only 1 required the NYS Security Guard License.
Hope this helps.

If you are working as a security guard in nys you have to be registered with the state. dont let anyone tell you different. If anyone needs the laws I will post them.

I worked as a Loss Control Manager for K Mart back in 99 and they never required one, but we all know how good they are doing now, so maybe they got in trouble for it.
