View Full Version : Cynical and Jaded? Yeah, I guess

I am new to this forum and am amazed at the questions posted and some of the responses. Some of them I have responded to with cynicism, some with advise. For me it is difficult to separate the posers from true LEO's. The older and experienced are easier for me to identify. Some are blatantly obvious posers.
To the newer Officers I apologize for not taking your post seriously or responding with humor. I realize that your responses to some of these questions are sincere and well intentioned. Some of the questions **** me off though. Watching an Officer answer a question and then receiving attitude and argument for that response first makes me laugh and then hit the keyboard.
From the recent poll "How long", I see I am in the minority, most of the real LEO members are relatively new to their career. I salute you and envy the experiences you have yet to face and resolve, hopefully in your favor. To those who come here to argue with a cop because you didn't have the guts to do it when you were face to face, LOL " shakes head and mutters epithet".........
I still remember listening to "those" who would start a conversation once they found out I was a cop with " My friend once got screwed by.........."
It always ended with "I know you guys have a hard job and I really respect you..............." LOL "shakes head, laughs, mutters another epithet"
So in closing, if you are a LEO and I somehow offend you I apologize. If not then.................

That's how it is here. I think we do a pretty good job of getting rid of the trolls pretty quickly.
On the other hand, i agree with a lot of what you say. It seems to be a generational thing. A lot of today's new officers have a sense of entitlement and whine when they don't get an answer they agree with or hear something they didn't want to hear.
Stick around a while, look at the number of posts someoen has made, taht will give you an idea of who has ridden out th storm. In the mean time, I say carry on; sometimes humor and cynicism are the way to go.
And to those that don't like the answers you get from those that have been working since around the time you were born - get a thicker skin if you are going to stay in this job. If you don't like the answers, go ask them somewhere else that will facilitate burying your head in the sand.

RKT I know what you're talking about, but no need to apologize. Most, not all, of the kids new to LE know everything there is to know about law enforcement, just ask them, and the wannabe's just make it up. There's some of us that have been cops longer than a lot of these kids have been alive, and yes we all get ticked off. This is just a public website, noone verifies LEO's, so like so many other things, read the posts and take them with a grain of salt. Shake your head, smile, say WTF, and go on. I read the posts, answer the ones that I want to, and yes sometimes I'm serious and other times I try to be humorous. Thanks for listening brother.

I agree with a lot of what RoadKingTrooper says, and have noticed that typically guests at this site outnumber regestered users by about 5 to 1, and amoung registered users, LEO's seem to only be a little over half (based on looking at the public profiles). With that said you can usually pick out the legit ones, Just remeber Sturgeon's law "90% of everything is crud" - he came up with this before the internet ant it is even more applicable today.

I once stirred the pot with a thread in the ask a cop section similar to this one. Basically I said we are here to educate you not the other way around. They started an I hate Garbage Man themed thread in the civvie section.
Mostly it was all in fun...
well at least I had fun:D
Now do one on being CCW or being a member of a cop motor cycle gang.
be carefull on the later one though, passions will fly. I was banned for a time after I quoted a guy who called me an insulting name. He said "you are a blank" and I replied "You are only calling me a blank because you have no other argument." then BAM see ya Garbage Man..
My point being take this palce for what it is, you can have fun here. If anything that anyone says get your blood boiling then quit, lifes too short.

The problem with the rookies are they are just like teenagers. They take a little bit of knowledge and think they have all the answers. After a few years in the field they become just like responsible young adults; their parents (or FTO's) were a lot smarter than they gave them credit for and they don't have all the answers. At this stage is when they really start to learn.

Now MDR do you claim every rookie to be this way?
Just like I claim every woman to be crazy. They just come in different levels of crazy.
Would you say the same thing that all rookies are "know it all's" to an extent?

It'sUSUALLY immaturity mostly. You generally don't see that attitude from men and women who come on the job in their 40's or even 30's.

Okay, I guess some miss my point, I am not complaining about the Rookies, my theme is pointed at those that ask questions under the pretense that they are Cops or citizens wanting merely to argue.

Frank usually shuts them down pretty quickly, especially if the post/thread is reported. Others enjoy the game of playing with the posers and cop haters. I admit, I like playing. That being said, the thread is usally started by the trolls and can easily be avoided.

Doesn't really bother me. Anyone who is not a cop or not married to one generally doesn't "get it" anyway. There doesn't seem to be a huge majority of people "in the middle". Many are either anti-cop or so pro-cop as to be unreasonable in the other extreme. Then they blame "us" for the "us vs. them" mentality prevalent among so many.
I sorta like talking to someone who starts out with the "I respect law enforcement, but...." approach. They generally don't get past the first few sentences before it's fairly clear that they're "pro them". That is, the cops are great until they stop them for being "only" a second late on the light or take their kid to jail two days after he ages into the "adult" column and ruin his future over a little bit of weed instead of throwing it away so he can get into the Naval Academy.
What does it take to turn many self-described "pro police" types into cop haters? One arrest, either of them or a loved one. That's not much.
I try to keep that in mind and remind myself that they're still the ones we work for whether they know what time it is or not.
