At the FFL Gun store. You will fill out a C-form (peace officer status) verification form when you purchase a weapon. The FFL dealer will fax your form to albany and your status will get verified by the NYSP(pistol permit dept.) and DCJS(state LE license dept.) You may wait about 10 days. The FFL dealer will call you back to pick up your firearm. Then you will fill you the Federal(BATF) form at the FFL dealer and the dealer will call your special ID # in and they again will verify that you are federaly able to possess a firearm. There is no background check like you are thinking about. But with NYCDOC you will have to wait 6 months-1 year to get approved to purchase a off-duty firearm by the warden.

Funny story about this. When we first went to the 9mm, I had a coveted spot in the transition course. The store where I purchased the Glock 26 screwed up my paperwork for this "quickie" background check. Then the owner of the gun store passed away. I had ONE day to get a glock to get into the class. Then this crazy guy I used to work with offered to lend me his. After a promise of a liquid lunch, I agreed. He had a laser sight in this gun (unauthorized) , but he took it out. ...Except for 1 internal part. The range officer called me in the back and asked me about it, and I said that I bought it from a retired MOS What a fiasco LOL, but at least I got into the class.
