I talked to our Quartermaster the other day and he tells me we are switching weapons at the first of the year. Currently we carry the Smith and Wesson.45 weapons Model 45065-1. We are switching to the Smith & Wesson M&P45. Other than obviously going from 8 round magazines to 10 round magazines what are the pluses and minuses?
Thanks

First off, don't believe anybody who might compare the M&P to the Sigma...I'd bet my next paycheck that those folks have never carried the M&P.
The M&P is a very nice weapon. Its polymer frame makes it significantly lighter than the 4506. The interchangable backstraps make it easily adjustable and comfortable for different size hands. It's a very smooth shooting weapon (my second favorite of any duty weapon, right behind the Sig P229...and I've carried the -06 Smiths, Glocks, and Berettas). The only thing that took a little getting used to for me was the two-piece trigger.
I can tell you that, when my PD switched to the M&P .40's, there was alot of doubt. Now, I don't know of a single person who dislikes the M&P.

I've heard good things about the M&P although I've never had the opportunity to shoot one. I believe that you'll like it and wish that your agency had made the change before they did.

+1 --- Firearms instructor for SHP and I just shot the full size and compact versions of M&P a couple of months ago in .357 SIG. Behind the 229, it is probably my next favorite. Very nice shooting gun with a good feel. Seems a lot better put together than the old S&Ws.

How does that work with the hand grips? Some of the guys has said we have three choices. I have always like glocks, anyone which one would be closer to that style of the hand grips? Or are the hand grips more of just a size wise for the hands thing? As for magazines I did hear yesterday that there is an option for law enforcement magazines. Not sure which magazines they are going with yet the 10 or more.
I found it similat to a Glock but with better magazine release and slide stop. Better than the 4506.
Why just a 10-rd magazine? I would have expected 12 or 13, like a Glock .45.

The back of the handgrip is removable and comes with three different size inlays. It's primarily for different size hands, making the back of the grip bigger or smaller.

I carried the Glock 17 and 22 and now carry the M&P 9. I love it (with the exception of taking it apart) It is light weight, easy to shoot, not a lot of moving parts, apprears to be reliable and accurate. I have found that it will fit in most Glock holsters (even the serpa sells the same holster for the .45 as they do the Glock 21) Overall, high ratings on my part.
