I don't know how they run the academy classes in S.D. I can only relate to CT POST standards whereas:

For about the first 6 weeks they will be on your azz about everything and anything in an effort to see if you will drop out. This is the way they weed out the people that can't take a lot of stress. It's basically a military type of environment. Expect the "yes sir/ma'am", "no sir Ma'am" lingo.

After that they tend to ease off somewhat so that you can concentrate on your studies. But be aware as to what is going on around you. i.e. We were required to salute ANY passing officer above the rank of Sgt., do it without "eyeballing" them and also "make way". If we missed one it would cost 50 -100 push ups depending on the rank and we would get a verbal lashing on top of it.

We had 2 inspections a day. One in the morning (room & personnel) and one just prior to lunch (personnel only). I had all of my shirts custom tailored with military creases sewn it etc. I used to get dressed wearing a pair of socks on my hands so I would not leave fingerprints on the brass belt buckle or shined shoes. A violation and you're doing push ups.

As far as taking tests I wouldn't worry about that in the first few of weeks. If you do have trouble it is up to the other members of the class to assist you with these matters because you are suppose to be working as a "team". If you still have trouble your assigned advisor (an instructor) will assist you.

Prior to our arrival at the academy we were given a SPECIFIC list of equipment. On our list was a pair of winter gloves. Well, a few guys didn't bring them because it was the middle of the summer. Needless to say they got their butts reamed. Then there were a few other guys that brought other items that were NOT on the list. This was considered contraband as was gum, candy, asprin, etc.

It is stressful, hectic, and at times down right miserable. Quitters will quit, some will not make the grade and will have to withdraw. BUT, once you make it through and you're at the end of graduation day you'll find that you're actually proud of yourself and on an emotional high. And you'll find your instructors are now completely different people.

Best of luck and stick it out no matter how rough it gets!

#1 thing to remember: Don't get a label...no class clown...cut up...so on...Have fun but this is not high school anymore...Best thing I can say is stay low key and excell in doing good on your paperwork and learning the high liability areas...

Believe you me, when you apply at an agency they will check with academy staff about your demeanor...So don't give them ammo to sink you early in the hiring process...
