I'm just wondering how many people here are planning on taking this exam.

As of right now, I'm planning on taking it...but I may just take a walk-in sooner if I have the time to get to the city in between then.

By the looks of it tho, we'll be starting the academy in January 2023 :-)

J-manX

Yeah i'm feeling like I should take the walk-in exam as well. I have one question about the exam numbers. In Feb it will be 8051 but walk-in they up to 8300+. Whats the different?

JdotB

No idea to tell you the truth. I never quite understood the numbering system that they use. Maybe someone else on here has an answer for that?

I've tried about 10 times this week....always no answer and get a voice mail.

Question about taking the walk-in test...I'm thinking of going soon but will be taking public transportation from Philly. Do they allow me to have my cell phone on me, but turned off? I want to take it with me on the trip, but I remember reading somewhere that they don't permit you to have it on you...but I was hoping they might have a little storage area to put it while taking the test.

I have the iphone and it will basically help me get there using the maps feature, and taking public transit throughout the city.

Thanks.

You just gotta turn it off and put it in your pocket... they'll make sure you do that too, so don't worry

I took the walk in # 8015 (I believe) even though I was already scheduled for exam 8000 a month later, because I was afraid I wouldn't be able to get off of work on the exam date. Even though I got a 95+ not including resident points, I still went in for my scheduled date on exam 8000, as luckily I was off that day.

That being said I was called in on the 8000 exam I took a month after the walk-in. Even though my score was slightly lower.

From what I understand they're gonna call you in on which ever exam has the lower exam #.

Hope that helps.

I'm going down to take the exam tomorrow. I was going to take the train, subway, bus to the place, but decided to just drive down instead. It would take me twice as long to take public transportation than to drive.

I just got back too

i disputed alot of answers... the rawlings bat was killing me, because the pic was black and white it was hard to tell if the bat in question was solid color or multi w/ a light gray

the question about letting the firefighter with no id bothered me too
the question stated he was on "unofficial" business... one of the answer choices had "official" in it so i didn't pick it, but it seemed the best out of the 4

perpwatcher
02-21-2009, 12:44 PM
I think I chose answer b for the bat that one was kinda silly.

The one about the firefighter the best answer was telling him sorry you were told not to let anyone in without id. And he wasn't on official business so that even more reason to not let him in...

But overall I think I did pretty good it was different from the previous two police test I've taken for other depts. But I feel like I aced it!

Just gotta wait and see what I scored!

How did you did on the memory part?

Then I definitely got those right. Now here's another one i had trouble with was a "you are on patrol and a little girl walks up to you telling you that her father fell out of bed and is having trouble breathing" "what do you do?"

two options i had were:
tell her to call 911
or go to the house with her and help

It seems proper protocol would be the first option, but i picked the second.

I did really good on the memory. In fact i got everything correct on the memory except the man with his back to the cop. The question asked what the man was wearing, "light blue jeans with dark shirt or dark blue jeans with light shirt... etc." It looked like he was holding a 9mm in his left hand so I wasn't paying attention to his clothing.

I hope I did good. Have the border patrol test next month... so i'll be keeping busy.

Yeah that memory part was messed up I was really paying more attention to the people and the guy with the gun not really his clothing so when they asked about his clothing I was at a lost. But I did remember everything else. I don't really remember now but I did during the test. lol

I just got back from the exam and I think I did pretty well. There was only one question I really had trouble with so I just guest. The memory was for the most part easy. I did have trouble with one or two questions regarding the color clothing. I do think I picked the right choice.

I don't recall the question of the firefighter that WannaBeTacMedic mentions.

It depends were you coming from and where you going.

I traveled from Westchester, NY and had to go to Brooklyn Tech. I was going to commute, but it seemed like it would have taken me 3x the time to get there and 3x getting back home. So I decided to drive. This was last Saturday by the way and my exam was at 10am. Anyway, it took me 30 minutes to get there (no traffic) :D and then drove around the block about 3-4 times before I found a parking spot right in front of the building. :D

If you can drive there, I say do it. It will be cheaper and less of a hassel.

Are you taking Border exam on march 16th?

I was in the middle of registering for it and some questions asked if I was willing to relocate to Texas, Arizona, or Northern NY and if I was not then the application will not be considered. I am not willing to relocate to any of those places and unfortunately those are the only locations that have spots open. So I stopped with the registering process.

I was hoping to be Border Patrol in around the NYC area or Florida. I will be moving to Florida within the next few years.

Is the Border Patrol exam the same for U.S. Customs?

No matter where you get assigned you will have to do 10 months at Southern Border first and then you will move to your assigned location. If you live in NYC, you will have to move no matter what.

Hey all
I just joined this forum and also took test 8051. I thing I noticed that I want to pass on is the number of people I noticed who bubbled in the answer sheet wrong.

The helper in me wanted to help but wasn't sure if I could or would be jeopardizing my test. The bubbles were filled in across not down on my sheet. Its sad to have people disqualified because they didn't notice the number they bubbled didnt correspond.

Be alert when testing!

Sorry if the post was unclear. I didn't take the computerized test, obviously. I meant the physical answer sheet where you bubble in your answers. The numbers on the sheet do not go down in rows, ex.

1-
2-
3-

Instead the consecutive numbers move across in columns.
1 2 3 4 5 6

So if you didn't notice this on the test you would be filling in the answer to number 7 thinking it was number 2.

Is that clearer?

I think everyone understands what you mean by that, but not what you're trying to say. Are you just letting us know that people messed up? I don't get it. If someone did in fact bubble wrong, it's up to them to take a new test. You can't expect the NYPD to go back and correct it for them..

Ok, so you are saying on the answer sheet the numbers went across from 1 - 6? and not down? You're saying that it was clear on the answer sheet that you had to go across?

I can only speak for myself, but my answer sheet had all the consecutive numbers going down. I made sure that I was filling the correct answer to the corresponding question. So, if I was answering question number 7, I made sure I was on 7 on the answer sheet. I made sure of that for every question. And once I finished the exam I double checked my answer sheet with the questions from the exam.

Unless they said in the exam that number 2 really meant 7 then I guess I DQ'd from this exam, but I can't see that from my answer sheet.

Did I mess up?

LOL HAHAHA every other row of people has a different style when you take the test. Mine went left to right, the person next to me went up to down. They do this so it makes it harder to cheat off the person next to you. Both of you lined up the #'s correctly.

jthope2b

So maybe different test sections have different answer sheet layouts? When did you take it AM or PM?

I took the test at 330pm at Forest Hills HS on Saturday Feb 21st. Because I was very careful with everything as well checking and double checking my answer sheet. I know the test is mainly paying attention to detail. Anyone else have thoughts on this? It would suck to get DQ'd for such a dumb thing.

Was it 6 months to a year? I thought during the exam they said less time than that because of the desire of getting more people into the academy. I had a friend who took a NYPD test in the summer/spring of last year-can't remember which off the top of my head- and made it into the academy class that graduated in Dec 08. So it isn't impossible that any of us who took the 8051 test could hear from them soon.

Now I just have to practice jumping a fence as tall as me...any suggestions?

slow down a bit as you approach fence, jump, place hands on top bar/hoist yourself up, foot on top of fence, land rubber side down. you can also replace "jump" with "step in the middle of the fence"

its really easy dont sweat it. go practice at a ball field or park, just dont do it at night wearing a ski mask

PRIOR to the last contract you could test and get into the Academy within a one year period or less.

NOW that is not possible, 1: Applications have increased by 100's of percentages. For example walk ins used to average 100 or so a day, prior to them being cancelled they were averaging 350 a day ! 2. Reduction is authorized strength, size of NYPD is continually being reduced as the economy continues to decline. 3. Retirements and resignations for other law enforcement jobs has also declined for several reasons. 4. Average class sizes have been dramatically reduced, current class around 250, prior class sizes 1,000+. 5. Classes cancelled for the above reasons. 6. Unknown amount (said to be in the thousands) or older test takers that have and are re-opening their applications with APD, which puts them AHEAD of ALL current test takers now and in the future (for up to 4 years, depending on the old test number/date taken.).

So SLOW DOWN, it is likely that it could take several years for current test takers to move into position for additonal parts of the hiring NYPD process.

Wow thats crazy it could take a few years to get on board with NYPD. Are there any other agencies up in NY hiring a lot? I'm going through the process with LAPD and they seem to can't get enough and pay more even.

I was going to put in with NYPD for the hell of it, but no point if it could take over a couple years to get in an academy. Good luck to all though!

Eric,

I notice that the Delaware State Police is running ads in New York City newspapers for applicants. I know one member that came from NJ into that unit.

Also to the Maryland site and put in for the Maryland State Police.

Yeah they are starting to hire again now possibly (I believe a State freeze is still in place)

Great department, just not my cup of tea, I'm only looking for city policing as of now. But I would definitely encourage any of you guys to try out for it. Start over 50k, and thats a lot for DE, most making 100k in 5 years or so...

Looking around at some cities that maybe still hiring from reading these sites;
Baltimore, Dallas, Vegas, LA, Fairbanks Alaska, Wash DC

Look for some old PBA mags, they have ads for various cities that are/were hiring.

I still have not gotten the results from the 8051 exam. I know they are filing now for the next test in october. I was thinking of taking it. Would this hurt my chances at all? Or would i just have 2 list numbers in the future?

I called that number today... the woman who answered said I would have to wait for my letter but checked the system for me anyways. She looked up my social sec # and she said I'm in but have to wait for my letter because there was no list number.

My exam was the same as yours 8051, how did you get yours already?

Can someone tell me what exactly the relevance of the list number would be? Does that number give you an idea of exactly where you are as a whole or does that just tell you where you stand as far as this particular exam? (In my case, Exam 8051)

Hey guys, I took exam number 8312 and got my list number in the mail a couple of months ago. I am not expecting to be in the academy any time soon, hopefully summer of 2010 when they may have a big academy again.

But curious, I see everyone calling human resources for list numbers, Once you get your list number, don't you have to wait for a letter from NYPD to schedule further testing? Just curious if I should be calling to try to set up further testing, I thought you just had to wait for them to contact you.

8312 Is the December Walk in?
Just curious if anyone knows the answer but i have enlisted in the Reserves and they guarantee an interview with a company and of course since i have already tested (exam 8051) I requested an interview with NYPD in hopes of expediting this whole process. Curious if anyone thinks this may expedite it for me? Please share your thoughts.. Thanks!

Your list number is like your score its there form of a ranking system, the lower your list number the better you scored over other people (i.e. there hiring 10 people and 15 people pass the whole process & can be consider to get hired they would take the 10 people from the 15 with the lower list number meaning they scored higher on the exam, unless one of those lower scores has a hook). I also heard your exam and list matters when you try and take vacation days; if you and another rookie try and request the same days the person who took an older exam or if you both have the same exam the person with the lower list number will get the pick for vacation days.

Hope that helps, if I missed anything please feel free to add

You can have a 70 and still get through the hiring process. Don't overthink to much.

I got a 89.5 with a 94.5 adjusted scored, and a list number of 7**,a friend said he heard the january 2010 class may have a class size of 2000, what do you think my chances are of getting into that one if that is the case?

I think i could have done better if i did better on the memorization part, i though i had to remember mostly the details of the stores in the pictures, like it the practice exam, than it turned out to be a lot of questions on what people were wearing and what color.

If i retake the exam, do you think it could improve my list #? Or am i just wasting time since it took 5 months for them just to give this result back?

a friend said he heard the january 2010 class may have a class size of 2000

There is no way to know this; look what has gone on with the July guys. There will be tons of speculation coming up on these boards over if there will be a Jan class at all and what its capacity will be. First step is to get the current academy under way now that the freeze is over and wait and see what happens next fiscally with the city.

Your score is not bad so I personally would not retake it, but that is up to you. Just relax and remain patient because getting on the job now is not as easy as it once was.

1st post...this is my second time taking the test because i was dumb and let my 1st test expire (if you want to know just ask)....

the 1st test i took was in June 04' and got a letter in January of 05' so the 6 month rule seems pretty accurate. Just wait it out and one day you will be surprise and open your mail to a letter from the NYPD...I took the walk in 8051...just wating it out, I think maybe september we will hear...

I got my score in the mail the other day as well... scored 100.29 and my list number was 111. I don't expect to get into the NYPD academy for a few years. They only just got into the 7000 number exams. I'm about to head into the Fall Academy for DEP anyways, so I'll have my foot in the door if I want to transfer. It would be nice if the DEP would get a better contract like NYPD just did.

What do you guys think about exam 8051 having a chance at July 2011 academy? Or is it going to take longer then that? Even if they start hiring 1000+ recruits I still think there is a lot of people before 8051.

I think thats been answered in this thread already.

From talking to NYPD cops on the street I have been told that they need cops. When this freeze is over you'll get a call. Do not know however if this is in 6 months a year, 2 years or 3.
