Hmm so they won't even allow overtime to cover the fewer police? It sad they will send (force) cops down from upstate. That's not a very good solution, in my opinion. I wonder how they will handle the next academy? If they double up on how many they take in then cancelling this year was pointless! On a better note, Poch, looks like we will get LI which works out for us. Hopefully a better contract goes through so they don't lose more than they already have.

I think we should kick the State Police and the State Park Police back upstate and go back to the Long Island State Parkway Police.

Long Island practically floats the rest of the state and we get jack in return in regards to state services.

I feel sorry for the Park guys. They go to the State Police academy, for the same a mount of time, but come out earning $20,000 a year less than Troopers do. Then they get stuck in regions (ie, Palisades, Taconic, NYC and Long Island) where the local coppers make TWICE if not THREE times as much as they do. So do these guys transfer or quit as soon as they can -- you betcha! Just another state mismanagement - at no fault of the great guys who do a tough job.

It's a shame that the brand new training facility will go unused for quite some time.

Anyone hear anything that someone high up in the Parks Dept is going around saying if they are forced to make more budget cuts that they will disband the park police? Something to the effect in conjunction with the union complaining about lack of manpower and local cops having to take calls in the parks, that the locals can patrol them too?

Wow

I wonder if that were even a possibility what would happen to all the officers on the job now? Would they get absorbed into another agency? I would think that it would be pretty hard to disband them especially since they just spent about 6-7 million on a new facility. You never know but I would seriously hope not.

Thats great. Has anyone seen the LI State Parks recently? I never goto Jones Beach anymore, too much ghetto trash their now. I started going to the Nassau Lido beach, they check ids, it's nice and quiet and no trash cause its too expensive for hoodrats to visit. Best of luck to the state park guys.

I think that NYC and Long Island should break off off NYS and become the 51 state.

While I do agree with that I think LI/NYC should become a separate state, it would be too complicated and difficult to work out. For one, what would they rename upstate too? New New York and Old New York? North New York and South New York?

Besides, Puerto Rico is already in line to be the 51st state ... we could take 52nd though :)

How about just " Long Island" ?
