Those of you who have hopes of getting hired in Massachusetts may want to read this. Massachusetts is going to be hurting for some time. This is only the first whack. Many other cities/towns will follow suit. I am lucky in my town, we are told we are safe from lay-off's until December 03.

All the guys have a crack at the first civil service jobs that come open in thier region, and retain their employment rights in Springfield for 10 years.

Springfield announces layoffs of 76 police officers

By Associated Press, 2/4/2003 18:36

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) Mayor Michael Albano said 76 city police officers will be laid off because of state budget cuts.

Albano said Tuesday that pink slips will also be given to 35 of the police department's civilian employees.

''I suspect that this is the biggest cut in the history of the police department, and due entirely because of the cuts we have received from Beacon Hill,'' Albano said. ''The cuts from the Romney administration are not going to work for Springfield, and they will not work for the commonwealth of Massachusetts.''

Albano said he will announce more cuts to city services later this week.

Gov. Mitt Romney announced $343 million in spending cuts last week. He says they are needed to help plug a $650 million budget gap. About $114 million of those cuts are in state aid to cities and towns.

Albano and other mayors have said those cuts will force them to scale back core public services. But Romney has said it is up to individual communities how to juggle the cuts.

Police Chief Paula Meara said she's concerned that layoffs in her department will hamper response time to emergency calls.

''We know that we can't possibly deliver services in the same manner as people are accustomed with,'' she said.
