Todays nypost has an article and quotes from kelly. It says that july academy class has been changed from 2000 recruits to "500-750" due to bad economy and less police officers retiring. I don't have the article infront of me but I'm surprised nobody posted it yet.

I think it will be canceled though.

It's always been a haven for victims of crime. Now the NYPD is becoming a shelter for victims of the economic crisis.

Applications to join the Finest are soaring and fewer cops are looking to retire, Commissioner Ray Kelly said yesterday.

"Retirements will slow down just because people will find it more difficult to find other employment," Kelly told at a City Council budget hearing.

He said 80 percent of cops usually retire after 20 years, when they become eligible for half-pay pensions and lifetime medical benefits.

"That's down to the lower 70s," said Kelly. "That's a reflection, we believe to a certain extent, of the economy."

It was only months ago - when the economy was booming and the police starting salary was an embarrassing $25,000 - that the NYPD was struggling to fill its academy classes.

So many veteran cops are staying put that the next police class in July 2009 will have just 500 to 700 recruits, down from a projected 2,000.

That led to some sharp questioning from council members upset that Mayor Bloomberg has canceled the January 2009 police class to save $36 million this fiscal year.

That number is low. That number can't be including backfill and people that drop out or booted out of the academy. I bet its going to be somewhere in the mid-800 including backfill.

What the....this is not good for someone like me that is taking the test in February 2009, Test 8051.

I was hoping to get into July 09 academy at the best, then most likely January 2010...but now it's looking more likely July 2010.

Ugh...at least city council is upset at Bloomberg which can be a decent shine of light.

Question about how the list works...

I'm taking the exam in February 2009...is it possible for me to move higher on the list than someone who has already taken the exam at an earlier date?

Example: Someone took the exam in August 2008 and scored a 94 on the exam. I take it in February 2009 and I score a 96 on it. Would this leave me higher on the list, or does the person who had taken the exam before me, tho with a lower score, place higher on the list because he took it earlier?

Sorry to tell you. That's not how it works. Older exam numbers get seniority over any ones that are current. And a lot of older exam numbers opened there cases because of the salary increase. If you score 100%. It won't matter. Most likely everyone in your test number will get called to medical if you score a 70 and above.

So would it be better if I just cancel my exam on February 21st and take a walk-in exam ASAP? Be better as in; putting me on higher seniority than someone taking it on Feb. 21st?

Yes, thats what you should do. I took the walk-in and also received my score the same day. Its going to take like 3 months for you to get something in the mail and APD is still processing people until they get the stop sign. If its true, 500-700 recruits then were all looking at Jan/July 2010. They're different answers every month, so anything could happen.

Thats a pretty old test.

June 2005 with test dates of 6/17/05, 6/18/05, 6/23/05 and 6/26/05. Do they go by the date you take the test for the 4 years? Or the date they release the grades? That test seems like its right on the edge for July 2009. If its inline to make it you would be first inline. Good place to be at this point.

I found the test info here

I honestly think that in jan 2010 when that new contract come in we will be in big a mess, because the contract might be as low as $25,900 per year just because of this economy problem and all the city cuts that they are doing i wouldn't be surprise. then they can put in 1200 recruits in a class at half pay. i guess that we all will be happy we get to be cops and the city gets its 1200 recruit at half pay. is it me or does any body feel the same way

At this point I think we have to take it 1 day at a time. Nothing is a sure thing anymore.

That was spoke about in this thread or another thread. What they said was it goes by test and list number. Since there is no Jan class we are mixed back in with everyone and they will go in the order of test and list number. I dont know what to think anymore.

Cancellation of July 09 class.

At this point I think they are trying to have as few classes and recruits as possible until 210 when the new contract comes where they will be able to drop the salary back to 25k. At that point they will put a huge class in at half the price to save money for the city.

I am with you on that one ! I cant help but find it amazing that after the new contract came out they decided to cancel this class. We should make a list of things that the city wasted money on that could have went to a Jan 09 class. Ill start with saying I have no Idea why the city pays ( some ) parents to make their kids go to school, your supposed to send your kids to school!

Sad to say but the City can actually go a couple of years before it would have to put in a large class in the Academy. OT costs to cover a shortage in no way equal the cost of new hires. Odds are the City will not look to repeat the disaster of the lower starting salary......it wasn't the City's idea to begin with and a 10 or 15 K savings per recruit is not going to close the budget gap.

wonderful. I hope I can even re open my case on Friday morning. never in my dreams did I think suffolk county might be a better chance of happening than NYPD. By the way, my test was 5046.

Just because the contract expires on such and such a date means nothing. The city AND the PBA are used to negotiating for years with the "new" contract in limbo.
Keep in mind that some agencies like NYSP and Chicago PD have applicants that wait for 3 - 4 years IN THE SYSTEM to be called.
Use the time to your benefit, get in shape, pay down your bills, help out your family in some way....sweat equity costs nothing.

doesnt the contract expire july 31th (something like that) of 2010 therefor all recruits until jan. 2011 will be under the current contract unless they decide to push the july 10' class back a few month to avoid paying them that much.

BigWill2876
11-26-2008, 06:17 PM
Don't try to overthink this, there is a contract in effect till 2010.

A new contract has to negotiated sometime. Sometimes the negotiations take years, sometime months.

UNTIL a new contract is signed off by ALL parties the old one stays in effect. You will receive what is in that current contract.
