I need to buy my Sam Browne for the academy. My questions is, what size do I need to get? I'm a size 34 waist, do I need to get the 34 or step up one size? I know I will shed some pounds during the academy so I don't want to buy another belt if I help it... Any advice?
Also, does brand matter on the level of comfort?

Go to a police supply store and try one on.
When I was issued mine I opted for one size up.

when you go to get fitted for your uniforms at the katella store try the belt on once you have on your class B's. the salesman will show you how to set up the buckle. make sure your shirt is tucked in and you have the underbelt on as well. i would go order your uniforms ASAP because the uniform store drags @$$.

X2, you will for sure lose weight. Might even need to buy another sam browne before the end of the academy. We're on week 16 and I've lost 21lbs already.

I don't about that. I gained about 10 lbs as did 1/4 of my classmates. I guess it depends on what kind of shape you are in from the start.
Your Sam Browne is usually about one full size up from your normal pant size.

Thanks for the replies!!! I was looking at Ebay for some cheaper pricing but it sounds like I better hold off until I get my uniforms....

They're all different. I had a Gould and Goodrich in 34 which fit perfectly, and now I have a Don Hume in 34 that's a tad too long. I'm a 32 in pants.
