Why dont you worry about getting the job first.

Im not worried about it, just asking a question. I plan on eventually putting in for aviation and wondered how many flight hours I need. I am pretty sure I'll get into the NYPD. I'm already a cop in MD, so I know the game.

Theres a decent video on the NYPD website about avaition although I dont think that they specify in the video exactly how many hours you need, or how many years you need, as I think most of the officers in the video are SGT or above, but none the less its a quite interesting video

I did see that, yes, I like the video. I only ask because I am doing a local Helo school here and I think when I'm done I will only have about 300 - 500hrs. But I will have a private cert., Instrument Rating, AND Commercial Cert.

Don't they like taking people with absolutely no experience also?

I doubt it.

I don't get the hate for these types of questions. Its showing that he has an enthusiasm for the job and wants to excel at it. Why should his FINAL goal right now be "getting the job?" He's got ambition, don't hate. And "the job" is not like its insanely difficult to get.

Annnnnnnnnndddd, end rant.

Thanks. I DO have experience. I AM a cop here in MD. And I AM doing a Helo school.

Thanks!

End rant, also.

Binz, I heard from a buddy in the NYPD that the Highway Patrol takes guys w/no experience and trains them to ride motorcycles..but you still have to do your time on the road..for some reason I dont think they'd let average Joe Schmo pilot a helo with no experience...But again, I dont see why they can't train someone.

I heard they like taking guys with no experience into NYPD Aviation and grooming them exactly to their standards from the get go.

The only time I deal with aviation is if there is a perp search. BUTTT I do know that you must have an excellent record(, such as no cd's/charges/excessive sick..etc... and a minimum of 5 years on the job is at least required to even contemplate of getting the position.

And it sucks that NYPD doesnt take previous years into consideration. I don't abuse Leave here now, and I have no disciplinary actions against me nor complaints.

From what I know.. they want to see you have fixed wing experience. Private needed, commercial preferred. 0 Helo experience is prefered, so i hear. They have their own school and don't want to have to break habits that you learned else where. Its their way or the highway type thing.

I'm a Commercial Multiengine and Commercial Single engine with Instrument ratings. I have a BA from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Aeronautical Science with a minor in Aviation Safety and ZERO time in Helicopter. From what I've heard from guys in the unit already, I'll make pretty much the perfect candidate. (Just what I've heard, I'm not on the job yet...)

I've also heard its ENTIRELY about who you know. If you know someone or they know or like you.. then you are golden regardless of training. So who really knows.

I'm just gonna worry about getting on the job at the moment. I'll worry about the Aviation Unit after probation.

Like I says before, being a cop here in MD, I know the game, so I'm not worried. Just very interested in the Avi. Unit.

So instead of rotary I should go fixed-wing then?

Hey JC,

If what I've heard is true.. yeah fixed prefered so that they can train you for Helo.. but its just what i've heard. I am by NO MEANS and expert on the selection process.

I've also been told you need a good hook...

hope that helps

I know of two NYPD that have helicopter experience (1 military and 1 civilian) and they have been trying for a while to get into Aviation. The one ex-military told me that there are more then a few persons with helicopter experience on the job, but only so many slots in aviation, a hook would be in order, merely being a pilot does not guarentee anything.

Thanks for all the help guys!! On the good side, one of our ex-mil guys is getting my dept. 2 used military trucks for use as a Mobile Command Post and one as a Mobile CSU truck. He said he can get an OH-58 Kiowa as well, if the agency wants...I was amazed.

Im happy for you that you know the game, IN MARYLAND. Its alot different here, be prepared for a culture shock. You're right, its not hard to get on the job but getting those units is a different matter entirely. You wont go anywhere if you walk into a precinct on day one with the attitude you have now. "Knowing the game" isn't going to impress anyone.

I know that, Im not trying to be cocky, and I think we have a communications breakdown. I was only asking because it was what I was interested in. My agency doesnt have specialized units, so that's why I was asking.

Ok Then, heres what i meant when i said to worry about getting the job first. The NYPD is a world unto itself. You would need five years on before you would be considered for Aviation. Learn the ins and outs of the job, then think about units. Too many guys come on and think only about units instead of being a cop.

Thank you. I do understand that NYPD is a whole different ballgame than my agency here. And I did not plan on going right into Aviation. But it is something I would like to do eventually. I have no problem working the road, hell, it's what I do here 6 days a week. I enjoy it.

Jchughes05, aviation is only 3 yr minimum with USPP if you are looking to stay in the MD area. Also you might want to look into US Customs(CBP) or Homeland Security, the pay is great, some of our guys are looking to go over there.

Try NYC DEP. They have aviation. It is out of Stewart in Newburgh. If you have any aviation, they probably would take you within 6 months of the acadamy.
