I know I will be laughed at for this one. I was on the freeway speed limit 100km/h, and I was going about 105/110 at the most b/c there was a cop to my right (I was in middle lane of 3 lanes). So, I passed him going not much faster than him, and he pulled me over. As luck would have it, I didn't have my registration or insurance b/c I just had it insured that day. The ticket was just for the lack of reg/ins not for speeding. Ticket = $250

Did he pull me over for speeding (initially) or b/c I am young and caught his eye, which intern made him check me out, then pull me over?

You passed a cop while you were already going over the speed limit and have to ASK why you were pulled???????????

my question was why didn't he give me a ticket for speeding? it just said "Failed to have valid registration and insurance" What I did leave out was that cars in the fast lane were zoomin past me, so clearly it wasn't speeding he was concerned about

Does it matter why he didn't give you one for speeding? I would look at it that you got a break.
But theres more to the story. If it is as you told, you were doing 5 or 10 over while other cars were flying past, and he stopped you, there's more to it that you've left out.

Nope that's all that happened from what I remember. I know police don't need a reason to pull you over; ever. Althought, he did say this is your first offence (clean record) so maybe he was implying that he knew I was speeding, but the fine was so big he'd let me off. I was just confused why he'd pull me over, rather than pull over the people driving 140-150km/h.

It's called Officer Discretion. Sounds like he gave you a break. You've admitted to exceeding the speed limit. He could have cited you for that as well.No real mystery there.

Okay that makes sense. Discretion is what being a cop is all about I guess. Some have good discretion, others do not; much like the tough decisions
about safety I have to make as a pilot. Safety is the number one issue ALWAYS!

In Canada, it is entirely legal to stop a vehicle for no other reason than to ensure the driver has insurance and is properly licensed to operate a vehicle on a public highway.
