Had a very exciting day today. Had the final interview with the Sheriff and now just awaiting my psych. If all goes well ill be starting at the beginning of Jan. I'm very excited.
Anything I need to do or buy or read while I wait?
Thanks in advance!
Get some really good shoes. Running shoes, uniform shoes (both corframs and boots). Have them professionally fit and break them in before you start. Dont go into the academy with cheap shoes, they will just wear out and have to be replaced and your feet will be killing you. You may be running and doing P/T in corfram oxfords or boots so make sure they are comfortable. Remember: If you take care of your feet, your feet will take care of you.

Congrats. I like the idea of running shoes. They are worth the money. Even if you get some $80 - $100 shoes it will be worth it in the long run. As for running in oxfords or boots, I never had to do that. Maryland must be a bunch of hard***'s. Hehehe.

Depends on the dept. Most give you everythingh except underwear and socks, but each agency does its own thing. Don't celebrate by getting boozed up and hooked for an OVI--it happens.

We would go on three mile runs in full uniform with our vests and fully equipped gunbelts (training gun, not real gun) on too. Some lucky individuals would even get to carry those red training shotguns, you know the ones that have weights in them to make them more realistic. FUN!!!

Good idea. If you know somebody on that dept. ask them what gear they give out, and get an idea. As for reading and stuff like that, I wouldn't. You are past the interview, and if you get in and go to the academy, you will be reading and learning plenty in the future. Another reason to not buy stuff is that the psych test usually sucks. Mine took me about 2 hours, something like 600 questions. I felt like saying "maybe driving a truck aint too bad" after about 45 minutes of it. They might have tight restrictions on what you can and can't have, so I wouldn't buy anything yet.

I really know what ya mean L223, we had to do the same thing!!!!! I love how they play it off as "you need to get a feel for how it is to have to run in full gear", more fun in georgous Prince Georges! And running in coroframs really sucks even if you have good shoes that fit properly. As for buying anything i would wait a little bit, allot of agencies do a orientation and provide a list of everything they want you to get. With that being said, do be prepared to buy stuff when you get in. Ive prolly spent a couple hundred.

I'm not trying to get ahead of myself at all. I understand the psych is a monster. I guess I'm just trying to be positive.
Thanks for the tips..

Stay that way, always try to be positive! Thats one thing that will help you get through those tough times WHEN (not if, ha positive) you start the academy.

I recently got my offer of employment and will start the Academy this upcoming week. I wouldnt buy anything just yet but be prepared to spend some money. Depending on the department you might not have to buy a thing, but with mine we have to buy everything but our vest and uniforms. They gave us a very specific list and we had to stick to it. Ive spent, or will spend over 1000 dollars. All of these purchases can be wrote off for taxes and we do get uniform allowances once we get sworn in which will cover the expenses but for the time being my wallet has taken a hit.
Congratulations on the offer and good luck on the psych.
