Can you elaborate more? Are they really hurting for people, or they being super-picky?

What happened to the other recruits? I thought there were more.

There were 4....1 or 2 dropped after a week or two, and 1 got injured.
We need people. Period. We are no more licky than LASD or any other agency is. Don't read more into that than what you see on your screen.
We are LA County Police. We have an appointed Chief, not an elected Sheriff. We are 24 hour cops. We contract to County agencies, such as Parks and Rec (my bureau), Health Services, etc. Uniforms are the same as LASD with a different badge and patch. Pay is less than LASD. We have black and white patrol cars with MCTs. We have ATVs, boats, 4x4's, and lots of other stuff. It's a fun job. And if you are looking to get your foot in the door in this economy, now is not the time for you to be picky....get hired. The economy will get better.

Yes it is. Most people cannot take that kind of a pay cut and feed their family, as it is most people that get into LE work are taking a pay cut anyways unless they are in their early 20's just starting out.

Yet, we are hiring. So, if you want to see what the pay is, and even apply online, visit the above link. If anyone else wants to talk crap, please PM me. This thread was started to get info on who was hiring. I gave the info I know about personally, and a link so the OP could make an informed decision on applying.

Do they give you a little something extra for having a bachelor's like LASD?

Apply wherever you can. My BI says they are going to get really selective for the upcoming academies. I also saw at Centre Plaza today that the Custody Assistant testing for the rest of the year was canceled.

Hmm why are people so picky. A cop is a cop, get hired and be on the job a few years and lateral out if you feel indifferent about the department. If you are young and dont have a family to support why not jump at any opportunity. Man, id kill to get hired on with county police.

Well, get-er-dun!! Well, without the killing part anyway....your chances of getting hired would diminish a bit if you did :D

Well, I'm not young (comparatively), I DO have a family, and the agencies that are hiring are a lot farther from my home, so if I can get a bump in pay for having a bachelor's, I'd take it! But this bad economy has helped me to focus even more on what I really want ... to become a cop. So that's what I'm going to do. :)

The Border Patrol is hiring about about 100 new agents per week. The past two weeks its been about 150 per week. There is talk of bring it to 250 new agents in training per week pretty soon. But if you were to stay in California you would pretty much be in San Diego or Imperial county. They don't really give you much choice when they offer the job but they are hiring fast. About 4 months from app to EOD. Even if you do not want to stay forvever with the patrol, it is very good work experience. The patrol is hiring the most out of any LE agency in the country right now hands down.

When does your next contract negotiations start? (You use POPA right?) I would imagine higher salaries is a top priority.

We begin gearing up for negotiations in March, and sit down at the table in June-ish. Salary and retirement are top of the list. Yes, PPOA is out union. The officers just joined PPOA as well, so we have a unified voice that we have never had before.

I am in the process of joining the Border Patrol out of San Diego. They said it is very unlikely to get a post here in Southern California. Texas, Arizona, New Mexico and some of the Northern border are a better chance. El Centro or Indio are probably the best chance if you want to be close to San Diego. Almost every applicant in Southern California wants to be close to home. They told me that if i want "in" i may have to take another state and transfer here when i get enough seniority. My cusin has been in 3 years and doesn't have enough yet. Stay safe.

It is possible to get SoCal. I was hired in july of this year and I got a SD county station. But you are correct about it being difficult. Most of the people are getting stationed in AZ or TX now. The ones getting a CA station lately have been going to El Centro. A lot of them are getting El Centro lately. Remember where you get hired is where you are going to be for a long time unless you want to go to a northern border station or transfer to another agency or quit. Southern border transfer are very difficult to come by from what my instructors tell me. I was very lucky to get a SD county station. Good luck to you with the process.

The Border Patrol is a Tough job! I joined the patrol when I was 21 and I am originally from San Diego, Ca. I was offered 2 choices when I received the CALL it was Willcox AZ, and Ajo AZ. I chose Willcox and I did not last 2 years because I kept applying to other Federal Agencies that had oppenings in
San Diego CA, and guess what? I was a very competitive candidate and I am back is Sunny San Diego with great experiences and a better perception on what other law enforcement agencies go through on a daily basis. Dont be picky for your first law enforcement job, just TAKE IT!! and the opportunities will eventually end up knocking on your door.
