I live in Colorado right now and am attending a self sponsored academy. Upon completion of the academy I will be POST certified, as long as I pass the test. My question, I have always wanted to move back to Southern California and become an officer, will my POST cert. transfer? Will I have to go through another academy for the department that I want to work for?

No, your qualifications do not transfer. Depending on the agency you apply to, they may require you to go through another academy.

I have completed a basic course in another state, can I transfer my training to California?

California POST does not have reciprocity with other states, nor do we have a challenge process. California POST has a Basic Course Waiver (BCW) process for individuals who want to become California peace officers and have completed at least 664 hours of general law enforcement training (including a general law enforcement basic course of at least 200 hours), and have at least one year of successful sworn general law enforcement experience. The BCW is a 4-step process that includes: self-assessment/application; POST evaluation; written and skills testing; and issuance of a waiver letter. Once the BCW process is successfully completed, the applicant receives a waiver of the California Regular Basic Course; however, acceptance of the waiver is at the discretion of the employing agency.

More information about the Basic Course Waiver can be found at:

Good luck!

Probably not.

It would depend on how close Colorado's POST is to California's POST. If their requirements are the same, then you would probably be ok. You may then have to attend an abbreviated academy, depending on the requirements of the particular department you want. For example, if your POST Certificate is accepted by California POST, the LAPD would allow you to attend a two month abbreviated academy.

Californina POST has a website you may want to try.. or maybe give them a call. Good luck.

We had a guy lateral to a NC agency and they picked him up right away with his CA post.

Hate to see you have to do TWO academy's .. One is bad enough!

California is not reciprical (sp?). Its basically the same for many State jobs in Cali (teaching credential, etc.) They won't take what you have from out of State without making it a huge headache. But all of the other States will happily take a cert from Ca. They seem to think the training is first rate here.

California is a LEFT COAST state. There are very few licenses, certifications, etc. from other states that CA will accept from a candidate to become licensed or certified in the state. Applicants almost always have to test or challenge when moving out here.

I found out with Level II certs I can go to NM and become a full peace officer with a refresher course on NM LE.

Still, how you can you beat SoCal? :)

Maybe later.
