I am looking for leads on depts, not in CA, that are currently hiring laterals. I am coming from a large dept (just under 9,000 sworn), and I am looking for a good dept to work for. In this I mean, someplace that supports their officers. I don't mean that I'm looking to get into any 10-30 stuff, but I want a dept that is going to cover my back when I do what I gotta do. Plus if/when you do make a mistake they don't turn around and run the other way disowning you. (I haven't personally had this happen, but I've seen it too many times.)
The thing is that at this time I am not willing to do another academy. Once was bad enough. I also want to stay with a dept at least bigger than 200. I just can't see myself going from handling 20 calls a night to 1 or 2. I like to stay busy.
Last but not least, I am looking for a place where a guy can afford to bring up his family in a decent area on a single income. (Not possible with most CA depts.)

Try the Oz PD. Just pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.

I know it sounds like wishful thinking. But I can say there are still some out there. I do have an application in one such place. Not perfect, but a good place to live and work. At this point anything is better than Los Angeles. Let me just say that the average home price in the ghetto of Compton and South Central Los Angeles is around 200,000. It doesn't get a whole lot worse than that.

If your wanting green pastures and no academy I think I have to second the first post. Zanadu and Utopia may be your only bets.

I'm raising 5 kids on one salary here and they take pretty good care of us. Our inurance is kind of mediocre and they've neutered our aggresive presence on the street quite a bit in the last 4 years or so but we've still never had a cop burned on a shooting here, ever. Part of that is the excellent training we get here including YES, the academy you would have to go through. It is modified to be shorter for lats but it is still an academy.

If I remember correctly there are a few places in WI that will send you to a very abbriviated academy. This academy is also low/no stress. It was 10 weeks long when I was there. Much less for prior LEOs. Milwaukee and Madison have their own academies but I think everyone else uses this one. Green Bay is a fairly large dept.

Like mountains? CO has quite a few PDs with laterals. With CA POST you could challenge the CO POST tests and skip an academy. The pay is good, the city is awesome and hell, half of CA live here anyways!

For the depts you want, look into Denver, Colorado Springs and Aurora. Denver has around 1300 cops, but you need to do an academy. CSPD has 600 cops, and will put you through an academy. Aurora has about 600 cops, and they require an academy. Unless you want to work for a smaller PD, you will need to do an academy. (Believe me, if you are from the dept I think you are, these academies will be a breeze compared).

If you will consider Tennesee. Knoxville, Chattanooga and Nashville have lateral entries.
And if I am not mistaken, all three are hiring. All three have decent web sites but Chattanooga stands above the other two. Very good web site!

Well, bmbl, if you find a job in Montana or North Dakota which is close to here (Plentwood MT SO or Crosby ND PD) and I am still here (T - July 2004 and counting!) let me know and I will try to meet you for coffee at Fortuna ND or Regway MT Customs!

bmbl, don't let dc pick up the pastry for break time. Just remember, if you THOUGHT it was supposed to have frosting on top, you're right!
