so to day i went down to the rso pat and was very happy with my times i got. i cant remember all of em but for the 500 run i got 1:18 and for both 6ft wall jumps low 6 seconds. i did the obstical in the 18 sec range. i cant remember the dummy drag time. the dummy drag was my last station. the meat wagon (ambulance) had to pick up 2 people. the deps that were there were very firm strict and rough, but at the same time they really interacted with the canidates. over all it was a good time. oh and i passed:cool:

Congrats Rich. I passed my agility a couple of weeks ago and turned in my background packet today. Looks like we might be in the same academy class. Hit me up if you wanna go running or work out. I am in the Orangecrest area of Riverside. Pretty much in the training centers backyard.

They said my group was looking at Early 09. So my guess is either Feb or April

Nice work, but keep in mind that the PAT is no where close to being representative to the physical training in the academy.

I was at that physical agility today and passed easily. I was shocked at how many people there were. You could tell how many people were there just cause they needed a job. There were quite a few people out of shape who had to jog the 500 yard run and couldn't make the 6 ft wall. They said that the next class is in December. They are looking to process the people from today into the class after December which will start in March. They said next correctional class will be in February. They said that 16 people had already dropped out of the most recent class. They are no longer running academies every month because of the economy.

i talked to the bi and he said if all things go perfect we all might have a slight chance for the dec class. if that doesnt work out then it's the march class. what did they tell you?

i was there too and your very right!!! you totally can tell who are not in shape!! when your passing out before the finish line i think thats a sign that your not ready for it. when your a grown man you should be able to jump a 6ft wall. some of the chicks were jumping that wall easier then some of the guys!!! why do people go and waste others time by not being ready and prepared?? i understand that the pay is good but it's what comes the heart is what matters not just a pay check!! gosh, for a friday work day there was ALOT of people there!!!

i agree with you 1000x's!! the academy does NOT only consist of a wall and one long lap!! try running 6-8 miles at a 8min mile pace and then get down and do a couple hundred of sit ups, push ups and jumping jacks!! now thats what i'm prepared for. i been training like this 3x's a week. it is not anywhere close to being easy.

Even if I did submit my application this Monday, I don't see how they could get us into the December class. No way would they finish a background in less than two months.

Some were probably out of shape. Others probably know a bit more then you do. Like the fact that the two highest scoring events are the 99 yd obstacle course and the solid wall. A HUGE effort on the 500 yard run compared to a jog yielded me a total of about 5 extra points back when I had to worry about the PAT. I figured out the scoring and jogged the 500 yd run everytime after that.

Everybody was supposed to do the run last. They told everybody beforehand that the run was worth the least amount. If the run was the last event, why wouldn't you try to actually run it unless you knew you could only get to the finish line by jogging. Judging by the amount of coughing in the auditorium during the background oreintation, I think it's a logical conclusion that plenty of people weren't in shape. I don't think that many people there suffered from exercise induced asthma.

i'm not trying to get into the middle of this little discussion BUT i was there and i have to agree with beagle. hb you would of been disappointed
by seeing how many people just did not have it in them. the passion shows when it's time to walk the walk. the passion just wasnt there in many people. beagle wasnt it just sad that even the B.I. AND D.I.'s had to comment on the way people performed?

Exactly. Not to mention the poly, psych & med. When you turn in your packet at the personnel shed, the nice lady will tell you 6-8 weeks before you even hear from a BI. Then probably another week to meet with him after you get the call. Even if you turned in your packet Monday, your background won't even have started till after the Dec. 9th start date of the academy. Not to mention the other steps that will take a few weeks under the best of circumstances. But hey, if they said it's possible, then they definitely know better than me!

Look I was there too and true, a lot of pople were coughing in the orientation but if the 200+ people that were there jumped both walls in 6 sec ran the 500yds in under 1.20 sec, obstacle course in 15 sec and just picked the darn dummy up and threw him over the line insted of dragging him most of us would be out of luck. Im sure there are people that did a whole lot better than I did but they might have disqualifacations in their history. I saw people there that did 1.30 on the run but still couldnt get over the walls. All crap aside Good luck guys :D

Ha-ha, I have exercised induced asthma, and had to put up with it when I was in the reserve academy--during our runs I had an inhaler. It would usuallly flare up at night when it was cool, which is when my academy took place; after 6 p.m. That six mile run near the end of the academy was killer but I got through it. :D

Why would you disagree with this? I think he's right on the money. That PAT they give is beyond easy, with the exception of the wall for some of the females. However, the 1.5 mile run shows endurance and at least gives a hint of what's to come in the academy. I'm 37 years old and smoked 2 packs a day for 18 years until I decided I was going to pursue this career 3 months ago. The day after I smoked my last cigarette, I tested myself on the 1.5 mile to see just how much work I had in front of me. I did it in 14:50 (and was dry-heaving), which sucks, but does show that pretty much anyone should be able to do it at the drop of a hat. I'm down to 11:46 after 3 months and still have 6 weeks to go before Dec 9th start date. 1.5 mile is not asking too much of anybody. Think of the $$$ the department could save by not having sooo many recruits drop out for PT reasons after all the expense of getting them that far in the process. Just my .02

Exactly. Anyone truly dedicated to getting a LE job should at the very least be able to run a relatively fast 1.5 mile at the beginning of the process. One lap around the track is a joke of a running test, any chump can do one lap. If they have at least a 1.5 mile test they can get rid of the people who aren't serious and most people who will get to the academy out of shape and drop out, thereby saving themselves lots of money and time on people who woke up one morning and decided to go try and get a job as a LEO.

I'm not complaining that there were so many people not ready as it helps me in getting into the March academy. I was just pointing out that you've got a bunch of people that probably saw their recruiting ads and just need a job as they've become victims of the economy.

It doesn't really help you because most of the people who were out of shape still passed because the PAT is weak, and it all looks the same in the end because it's pass/fail.

Looks like some of you did good on the PAT, (I'm in the academy now and we saw you guys out there on Friday morning) but remember, what ultimately will get you hired is how you perform in background, poly, and psych.
I know of people who smoked the PAT, and ran the 1.5 mile in the 9 minute range, and didn't get hired.
Best of luck to those in the process.
Nice. Congratulations Rich. I did the OCSD PAT today with my Pre Employment Prep. class. Our instructor told us not to try to break any records since we were going to do the course again the following week.
Their PAT is a little more challenging, but nothing to worry about for someone who at least goes to the gym a little bit. Timed events were worth points, and the pass/fail tests are given all or nothing points.
We had:
Dummy Drag - Timed
Trigger Pull (6 times in each hand) Pass/Fail
Obstacle Course -Timed
1 Mile Run in 10 minutes or less. Pass/Fail I squeezed out a 8:16 after not running for a while.
30 Sit Ups and 30 Push Ups - Pass/Fail
It was a lot fun. Being able to do this test before testing with RSO or SBSD will definitely help me out a lot since their tests are more or less the basic POST one.
Good luck!

Oh, I wouldn't say it was a breeze. The mile run left me huffing puffing for a few minutes after. I definitely need to run more. Adding up my score I passed, and I wasn't even close to the minimum, but I'd still need to improve.
I haven't applied to OCSD yet. It's a class offered through Santa Ana College that's taught at their academy. They are some VERY squared away individuals. I'd consider myself to be extremely fortunate if I ever got hired there. I'd probably feel like I won the lottery.
Their academy is beautiful. I haven't seen any other academies, but I feel it would be hard to compare theirs to anyone else.

Hello to all!!
WOW!! I was reading the post prior to mine and somone mentioned that it was said that RSO is trying to fill spots for December class or March. This information was given to people that just tested PAT on OCT 24th. I find that tuff to believe because on 9/26/08 I tested with RSO performing PAT, Turned in Background Packet on OCT 9th. And the lady told me 6-8 weeks before I would hear anything. Also I have a good friend of mine that tested three weeks prior to my PAT date. Turned in his Background Packet about week later, and still has NOT herd anything. So to me it seems like a LONG LONG process. I hope im wrong. Lord knows that I would love to upgrade my profession from what I'm doing now. I just had a new baby so this is two for me and my wife is working part time. I can't wait to get the phone call.
Chris
Chris,
The hiring process usually take 6 months give or take for most departments. You still have a lot of steps to go through. Some move faster, and some move slower. When a lot of people apply, it takes a lot of man hours to sort through everyone's life. A background investigator for OCSD that came to my class said he had about 70 files on his desk at this point in time. I imagine they could have hundreds of cases depending on the department. An agency only has so many positions to fill so they might spend some time figuring out who will be the better Deputy of two similarly qualified applicants. Be patient, prepare for everything, and do your best.
I wouldn't expect to hear anything until March if everything goes smoothly. I test with them this week. If I pass all the steps, I don't expect to hear anything until March/April. Good luck.

It will definitley take a little time. I finally have my Background Interview tommorrow and I turned in my packet on August 1st. So it took RSO about 11 weeks or 2 3/4 months to call me so depending on your BI you could be faster or slower. Good luck and don't get frustrated.

PAT - 7/24

Background Interview - 10/28

Well with the way this economy is that is discouraging to have to wait so long for the background interview. Why would the sergeant at the 24th orientation get our hopes up by saying that they would be trying to process us for the March academy. They're already cutting back on the # of academies they're running. I'm worried that they might eventually follow San Diego Sheriff and go into hiring freeze.

This post is a little late because I had problems getting my account activated but anyways I am proof that they are in fact trying to fill spots in the Dec. academy. I took my written July 20th, PAT Aug. 24th, Backround pack Sept. 1st, B.I. called me a week after I turned it in but I was out of town, B.I. interview 3??? weeks later, Poly. on Oct. 17th, Med on Oct. 24th., Pysch. written Oct. 29th, Home interview Oct. 30th, Pysch. oral Nov. 3rd, all we are waiting on is all my reference letters and a previous Medical clearence but the B.I. said it looks really good for Dec. Academy. It got moved back a week or two from the original 9th date F.Y.I. He told me that the dead line for them to get new recruits into the next academy is Nov. 20th. So they weren't lying to you when they said you could get in very quickly. Just lay everything out on the table and take the time to get your stuff in order. Scan the backround packet in your computer and type it. I know it is a pain in the *** but that is what I did and he was very impressed that I went the extra mile to make my stuff look professional. Also wear a suit that actually fits you!!!! I spent $700 on my suit and trust me when I say that he took notice. The first thing he said to me was "I like the tie." and then he said "Finally someone has a suit that fits them." That was very true because I saw a couple other people there and they look like the got a suit from Wal Mart. Spend the money because you need to impress your B.I. and this is a potential 6 figure income career. Your B.I. will move things along very quickly for you if he/she likes you. REMEMBER DON'T TRY TO HIDE ANYTHING!!!! Sorry for the long post and I'm not braging just tell you it is possible to get in quickly and trying to help you fellow recruits get thru the process quickly.

I signed the conditional the morning before my medical exam. My B.I. was rushing my backround because he liked who I was and how I presented myself. I'm not saying you have to spend $700 on a suit (F.Y.I. it was for the whole get up - shoes, socks, shirt, tie, jacket, pants, bag, hanger, lint roller, tax and most important professionally tailored. I could have saved a $100-150 shopping around but when I'm gonna make 60k whats $150 right. I looked at it as an investment because I will need it when I have to go to court later on in my career!) My whole point behind spending the money was from what my B.I. said to me, "FINALLY SOMEONE HAS A SUIT THAT ACTUALLY FITS THEM." Those were his exact words. All I was trying to say with this post was it was possible to get in quickly but you will only get rushed in if your B.I. REALLY likes you. They make the decisions and speak on your behalf, so spend the extra money to impress them and do not lie about anything. Mahalom3 I assume you just graduated so much congrats on that!!! I hate you because you will have senority over me LOL! What part of Hawaii you from just curious because I'm a SPONGER!

Sorry for the back to back posts but Avaand to answer your other questions I was informed that the Dec. 9th Academy had been pushed back a week or so. I was told this because I am soooo ready to quit my "day" job but my B.I. told me to hang in there til the 20th. He told me that the deadline for the B.I.'s for the dec. academy was Nov. 20th. I told him I just would like to have a little vacation before the academy so I could get my stuff in order before the 6 month M.I.A. duty begins. I really lucked out with my B.I. because he is very straightforward. I don't know if they are all like this but I very much appreciate him being straightforward with me. I assume you passed your Poly? I was told right after I took it that I passed. That was on Fri. They called me on Mon. to set up my Med. for that Thurs. and that is when I signed the conditional offer. Hope that helps you out a little?

That's great Bosss but your definitley one of the lucky ones. I took my Pat on August 24th with you and just had my Background interview last week because my old BI moved on to another position and I was assigned a new BI!!! He tried to push me in as fast as possible also but I cannot take my Poly until November 21st because there are no slots. But he definitley said February Academy so that is not too far away. Congrats on your speedy BI!!
