Desperate time’s people start doing desperate things. Sad to think things like the article below are happening.

Anyone know of any departments hiring aggressively in So Cal?

I don't know if anyone is hiring "aggressively" anymore, but I know RSO is hiring in general.

I've unfortunately become a sign of the times. Two of my agencies have hiring freezes. One is almost done with my background (and has verbally given me the "all-clear"), but is only hiring in trickles. Fortunately, there's no automatic expulsion from the waiting list after a year, so I have hope that eventually, my turn will come. The last has yet to start my background (although when I spoke with them a month ago, there wasn't a hiring freeze envisioned ... yet). :(

Keep applying to other agencies. Don't wait for each agency to hire you. A year ago I would not have said this but in this economy its the shotgun approach. Look at what you have to offer. If you have a college or military or law enforcement experience then great. IF not get some. anyone but get it. maybe think about applying for reserve officer some where. If you need a job now then try CSO or dispatch.
The other thing I would ask is how good is your current job? Are you paid enough? Do you have enough seniority to avoid lay offs. If so I would advise to stay there for now. This economy is no time to be the guy at the bottom of a seniority pile. Even a cop can get laid off. Remember the private sector is like a herd of deer. they panic at anything and lay off rapidly. A city is like a herd a buffalo they are slow to panic but when they do, they cant be stopped. They will run longer and farther, still laying off while the private sector has stopped.

In my case, I had passed 5 oral boards and was proceeding with all of them. I thought five would be enough, but sadly it isn't.
I'm definitely not giving up. I've now had two BIs say I have a clean background, I have near-perfect credit, a college degree, a kick-butt T-score and can pass the PATs. The stars will align one day. Hopefully that day comes before it's time to retire. :D

In relation to the shotgun approach, I was given crap about that in my Captain's interview by the Admin Lt.Eventually a non-select.I'm still going to try and get on somewhere. It's hard to believe anyone can expect applicants to process with only a few selections with the way everything is today.

I have been taking the shotgun approach and feel I can bring something to the table, so I know it's only a matter of time for all of us.
Good news is I have a steady career with good pay to wait out the economic storm. Bad news is it’s a boring and unfulfilling.
Best of luck!

Cal Fish and Game is trying to fill spots to prevent next year's retirement exodus from crippling us. Most vacancies will be in SoCal.

I would work for free if I could be in the Eastern Sierras, Don't need the states money or benefits.

Where do you frequent in Eastern Sierra's? I go up to Bridgeport yearly for the fishing. Oh how I miss it already. I thought about applying but the wife doesn't want to move up north. Shes a SoCal girl and theres no guarantee where you can end up working for state

I flyfish from Bishop up to the East Walker in Bridgeport, but do most of my fishing in the Upper Owens. I go 10-12 times a year, I spend about 80-90 days each season camping and fishing. I have fished the area for 50 years.

Another agency of mine below just initiated a hiring freeze. :( I only have one that isn't, but it's hiring in trickles, 10 per academy (small amount for an SO). I probably should just delete the signature line and start again with the two new apps I put in this month. ... The good news is I have two BIs who say I'm hireable. Just gotta wait my turn. :o

Hey Penny are you still waiting on SBSO??

Yeah, they're the ones that are only hiring 10 at a time. They hired 10 for October and already have their 10 for January. My BI said that April's a possibility, but July is more likely. Perhaps LASD can catch up and pass them by? I want to get this career STARTED.
