I was wondering, when you work for a local PD you have to work Patrol before you go into Vice. So in Federal Agencies, is there something similar that you have to work in before graduating to, say, the FBI's Cybercrime unit or the US Marshal Service's Witness Protection program? Just curious.

Some agencies do have specialized jobs.

For example OSI has tech agents, that are resonsible for things like high tech surviellance equipment, they have Forensic agents that get a Master's in Forensic Science at GWU, and advise case agents on the forensic aspects of their cases, they have polygraph agents, they have an Anti-Terrorism Special Team, etc.

The FBI has specialties such as HRT and SWAT, along with some of the other specialties mentioned.

ATF has Special Response Teams (ie SWAT), explosive K-9 handlers, Certified Explosive Investigators, Certified Fire Investigators, etc.

Those are just a few of the many examples.
