I'm sure all/most departments offer an educational incentive, but I am wondering exactly how it works. SDPD works on a rotating schedule, so how can someone effectively attend a semester of school when their work schedule can switch halfway through?

Sometimes this is a challenge to work with and this is why the online classes are so popular. I can't answer your question in regards to SDPD, but I know it is a challenge for that reason.
In the SDSO, patrol rotates shift every 3-4 months depending on station. The nice thing is that your days off remain the same (3/12 schedule) unless you change stations or something like that. So you can schedule your classes well in advance.

SDSO is my preferred department.
They rotate shifts every 3-4 months, but is it a set rotation? Will i know on day 1 after a rotation what my schedule will be like in 4 months when we rotate again?
I.E. Mornings -> afternoons -> evenings -> nights -> repeat
or at rotation, can you end up anywhere on the schedule.

I finished school on patrol. You can't do it until you are off training and have a set schedule. But then the shift are four months and work out to be from jan to may - may to sep - sep to jan. Perfect for the semester system at SDSU.
My command also hooked me up with the shift I needed (graves) even as a JR officer.

Yes, you days off remain the same..and for the most part they should remain the same and "may" change if you get in trouble for something, become a training officer, transfer, request a change. For the most part a number of guys I know have been on the same days off for years. In patrol with SDSO you will be on A shift (days), overlap shift (swing), or C Shift (nights). For the most part your days off will remain the same. A lot of times you can trade with other deputies if you need to stay of nights or days...This is usually accomplished through the administration at the particular station.

SDPD rotates every 4 months, and it coincides with semesters of school. I am going to grad school at san diego state now, and am taking one class a semester, on my days off. And the reimbursement takes about 2 months, but eventually shows up in your paycheck.
