Anyone know why they haven't had a class since 2006?

Not exactly sure but it seems that MSP has had a habit of infrequent testing and hiring...When they do run a class it tends to be large like the last couple of Trooper classes were...I know there had been talk of doing some "maintenance classes" that would cover the slots caused by retirements...but given the econonmy in Mass right now I wouldn't count on seeing anymore Trooper Classes for a while... Mass has always been a very tough state to get ANY police job in...Many people have done well by packing up and leaving for somewhere else...

Gov Patrick is making some significant budget cuts (like $200+million) at the state level. I have it on very good authority that MSP may be actually laying off troopers. The hope is that attrition can cover the cuts and no one will lose their job. Based on how MA is fairing financially, I dont forsee any MSP classes for some time.

I figured it was a budget problem but man they must have some serious problems if they haven't had a class in almost 3 years now and they are thinking about laying Troopers off.

Anyone looking to move south and get hired quick in a growing and good paying police dept. try Miami Gardens. Check the Miami Gardens web site for details. It is very busy here so if you like to work and don't mind making good money check it out. Go Sox

Phoenix PD here. Im from Boston and took the 02 MSP exam, scored a 95 and still waiting for this "maintenance" class. I love what I do but I sure do miss Boston and my family. I love Phoenix but it's no Boston. We have many guys as well on Phoenix PD from MA. Phoenix is great pay and they are still hiring, if anyone is interested PM me. They are facing some budget issues now so I dont know how long they will keep hiring.

Is there anyone left in Massachusetts to get on the job there? Looks like we've all gone elsewhere to get on the job! We should start our own little network so we can all go visit each other for vacation.

The detail law is changing. There will be no more police details on small streets or areas with minimum traffic flow. The construction companies are now allowed to use flagmen. This will affect more of the smaller departments, and maybe some MSP who are responsible for policing small towns out west. I do believe that they are going to eliminate the take home cars although that is hearsay. I forget the name of the bill but gov. patrick did sign it into effect earlier this year. If someone knows more about this please feel free to add.

It is funny how little has changed over the decades, in the realm of police jobs in MA. I moved to California from MA in 1977 (got on with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department).......... and I heard the same things then, in the mid to late 1970's, that I am still hearing from police hopefuls in MA in 2008! My Boston accent is virtually gone now, but I still get a chuckle when I bump into some new Deputy out here, and don't even have to ask where he is from..... the Boston accent is always a dead giveaway! Lots of guys coming out here from MA, lots of good police jobs out here in California. (And for you MA folks ....... out here, Deputy Sheriffs are the real police!) Just recently celebrated my 31st year with LASD, one left to go till retirement! Never regretted the move..... and I don't shovel snow anymore either, I just visit it - 2 hours away, in the mountains - when I want to!

Additionally the state police are making money off of the SSPO classes that they are running. I heard that they charge around 1 and half grand per recruit and they get about 40 to 50 per class. The recruit's agency supplies everything and the MSP just gives room board and training. I know they do at least one class a year, maybe more.

Oh and I also have no intention of staying in mass either. . . . .
